A. Research Findings

1. The Result of Research and Information Collection

a. Needs Survey The first needs survey was conducted on 11 th , 13 th , and 16 th March 2013 in Fun English Club FEC 2013 program held by English Education Department, Yogyakarta State University. The survey was conducted in two ways: observed the L1 class activity and interviewed L1 teachers of FEC. Besides, the second needs survey was also conducted by having an interview with previous L1 teachers of EFH and distributing an open-ended questionnaire to L1A parents of EFH 2013 in the beginning of the program. The previous L1 teachers were asked about their experiences in developing materials to the children, whereas the L1A parents were asked about their children’s needs. The results of the observations were presented as field notes; the results of the interviews were presented as interview transcripts and the result of the open-ended questionnaires were presented in the form of questionnaire tables. Those are provided in Appendix E Researcher R: “Apakah putra-putri BapakIbu termasuk anak yang aktif? Apabila iya, bagaimana bentuk keaktifannya? Is your child active? If so, how is hisher behavior ?” Parent P: “Ya, sangat suka kegiatan dengan gerak tubuh dan selalu mencari kegiatan baru. Yes, she likes activities with body movements and always searches for new activities” Open-ended questionnaire transcript 1, Appendix F and Appendix F. The result of the needs survey were analyzed to become the basic information to develop the materials. b. Needs Analysis 1. Children’s characteristics In Fun English Club 2013, since the program was new, there were only 7 children in L1 class. Their ages were about 5-7 years old. Based on the observations and the interviews with the L1 teachers, the children’s characteristics were different from one to another. The two of them were too active and had less attention, two others were active and responsive, the other two were shy and the last was quite. Moreover, the L1A children also had the similar characteristics with L1 children of FEC. It could be seen in the following quotation. 2 Children’s needs, lacks and wants The children came from different social and economic background. They also had different levels of English language proficiency. Due to their Researcher: Based on your opinion, was there any difficulty in delivering the materials to the children? Teacher D: Actually no. The difficulty is only when the kids are not in the good mood so that the teaching learning process is kind of hard to handle. Interview Transcript 1, Appendix F
