The evaluators agreed that the major objectives and the content of the designed materials were well formulated. The evaluators also agreed that the activities on the designed materials were well-arranged. Generally, the activities could 60 motivate the learners to develop their speaking skill personally. Also, the instructions in the designed materials were clear enough to be understood. Afterward, it was about relevancy of the designed materials to the learners’ skill level. The evaluators stated that designed materials were suitable for the learners’ skill level, learners’ needs, and also related to the learners’ life. It can be seen from the evaluators’ answer in which the designed materials had been evaluated on the degree of agreement 3 and 4 which means agree and strongly agree . However, there was a statement in which the degree of agreement was still low. Statement number 8, it was found that one of the evaluators was unsure whether the designed materials are suitable with learners’ needs or not. It might happen because the writer did not state clearly in the background that the designed materials based on the learners needs. Therefore, the evaluator misunderstood the background of the study. Generally, the evaluators agreed that the designed materials were interesting and varied. The used of the pictures in the designed materials were effective to help the learners stimulate their thought. It could help the learners enjoy the designed materials and the learning process. Hence, this set of instructional English speaking materials had been acceptable for the Junior KYM Sisters. The next was about the evaluators’ comments and recommendations in the designed materials. Generally, the evaluators stated that the designed materials were good. The evaluators’ comments and recommendations in the designed materials are listed as follows: 61 1. The evaluators’ opinion on the strengths of the designed materials: a. The design is engaging and the materials are well-planned. b. The design can enrich learners understanding to make an organized talk about congregation. c. It is easy to be understood and the materials are well-formulated. d. The writer has specific aim. e. Interesting because it contains cultural context. f. It has good combination of text and work book to use in class or individually. 2. The evaluators’ recommendations on things should be improved in the designed materials are: a. Some grammatical mistakes are found. b. It would be better if there’s a storyline that connects one topic to another. c. Cultural context only exists in one unit. Why not in all units? d. Need to be more varied in vocabulary section. e. To improve learners’ vocabularies you should include the real meaning or definition of each word. E.g. parish = paroki. It’s not meaning but Indonesian translation. f. You should prepare materials of four components in English: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. g. Students’ levels in English are not mentioned in the book. h. It will be better if in the objective the time allocation is mentioned. 62 Feedback, evaluations and recommendations from the evaluators were useful for the writer to revise and to improve the designed materials to be better. In this step, the writer revised the designed ma terials based on the evaluators’ feedback, evaluations and recommendations. The revision of the designed materials is presented as follows: a. The writer corrected the grammatical mistakes in the designed materials. The writer also changed some diction to make the sentences sound English. b. The writer faced difficulty in making the storyline of the topic because each unit of the designed materials had different theme and context. However, the writer made a storyline in a simple way on the warming-up activity in which the learners doing the task and it is still connected to the next phases. c. The cultural context appears in two units; unit 1 and unit 2. The writer tried to make the cultural context for all units but it did not work well. d. The writer modified the vocabulary section more varied. The writer let the learners to find out themselves the English translation of the words. e. The writer changed the instruction in the vocabulary section. At first, the writer stated find the meaning of the words and it changed to find the English translation of the words . f. The writer merely focuses in speaking skill in order to enhance learners’ speaking ability. g. The writer mentioned the learners’ level and the time allocation for each unit in the beginning of the learners’ book. The detail of the designed materials can be found in Appendix 6. 63

CHAPTER V CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the conclusion and the recommendations of this study. First section is the conclusion which summarizes the answer of the problem formulation. Second section is the recommendations which offer the suggestions for the English teachers in KYM Congregation and future researchers.

A. Conclusion

This study focused on a problem formulated, namely “what a set of instructional English speaking materials for the Junior Sisters of KYM Congregation looked like ?” In order to answer the problem, the writer adapted and combined the stages of instructional designed models proposed by Dick and Carey 2009 and also Morrison, Ross, Kalman and Kemp 2011 into six stages. Those stages are used as guidelines to design the materials. Those stages were carrying out instructional problem to find out needs analysis, listing the topics, writing objectives, developing instructional material strategy, designing the message, and conducting formative evaluation of instruction. The process in designing the materials was also based on the theory of Speaking, English for Specific Purposes, and Task-Based Language Teaching. In order to gain information of le arners’ background which included their needs, the writer conducted a survey by distributed the questionnaires to the ten Junior KYM Sisters and conducted an interview to the three Junior KYM Sisters. 64 There were four units of the designed materials, namely Introducing Self, Asking for and Offering Help, Promoting KYM Congregation, and Visiting Sick People. Every unit contained of five elements. They were Warming-up Activity, Conversation Practice, Language in use, Exercises, and Vocabulary Log. In the process of evaluating the designed materials, the writer distributed the questionnaires to the two English lecturers of Sanata Dharma University and to the KYM Sister. The material evaluation was proposed to find out feedback from the evaluators. The findings of the evaluation were used to revise and to improve the designed materials. The findings of the designed materials showed that the designed materials were well planned, interesting, clear, and appropriate for the Junior Sisters of KYM Congregation.

B. Recommendations

In this section, the writer would like to give some recommendations to those who would use the designed materials. 1. KYM Congregation a. The writer recommends the KYM Congregation or those who will use the designed materials in the KYM Congregation should read and should understand first the background of the designed materials. b. KYM Congregation is allowed to modify the activity based on the condition and classroom needs. c. KYM Congregation can add some interesting speaking activities in every meeting to motivate the Sisters in improving their speaking skill. 65

2. Future Researchers

a. Future researchers especially KYM Sisters may conduct research by implementing the designed materials in order to measure the effectiveness of the designed materials. b. The designed materials can be used as a guideline for those who are interested in designing materials for specific purposes.
