Physical Abuse Psychological Factors

of the question why his mother did that to him and, he did not realize that slowly it started to disturb his mental health. The condition and situation that he faced at
home with his mother made him fragile and depressed. In the story, besides love and care, his mother did not give him a comfortable condition that he dreamt of
either until one day Kawashima met a woman named Yoko who then became his wife. Yoko gave everything that Kawashima did not get from his mother. That is
why he did not want to lose Yoko. Usually, he would feel threatened if he thought someone would take Yoko away and if it is happened, he would be suspicious,
anxious and fearful which would make him got hallucinations and delusions. Delusional is one of symptoms in schizophrenia. That symptom appeared
because Yoko had everything that he needed to overcome him while his mother did not have. Besides delusions, his hallucinations also appeared. It appeared
because he felt oppressed by any situations that might harm himself. It can be seen when Yoko murmured something to Little Rie. Here, he saw Little Rie as a
threat p, 16. From the story, the writer concludes that Kawashima found an ideal figure of a mother in Yoko. For him, that was the right feeling that he had really
wanted and dreamt of in his life. That is why when he thought that his baby could take her away from him, Kawashima felt oppressed by the environment around
him. The stimulation from object in front of him then led him to get hallucination and delusions.
Hallucinations are the result of his fear and anxiety that came in sudden. In Piercing, some types of hallucinations that appeared sometimes would persuade
him to be violent; it looked like violent would be the only way to overcome his

fear. In short, the hallucination appeared because Kawashima’s thought had been disturbed by an object around his environment. Here, the environment where he
stayed in when he was a kid had affected his mental health until he could not think logically. That is why he became paranoid, got delusions, hallucinations and
violent. Another environment factor that affects his paranoid schizophrenia is
found in Home a place for children who get abuse from their parents. The reason he stayed in Home was because his mother always locked him in the house when
he was about five or six years old, and not long after that his teacher got him placed in Home for abused kids after knowing what his mother had done to him
p.13. In Home, Kawashima showed a bizarre behavior by drawing nothing but pictures of narrow roads p.13. Thing that he did in Home actually was an early
symptom that showed that he was different from other people. Pictures that he drew showed that he was feeling empty, fragile and lonely.
Home actually was not a good place for him to recover his psychological stance from trauma that he got because in Home he met people who were the like
him, children who were rejected and abused by their own parents. The atmosphere in the Home did not help him to recover trauma, but it only made him go insane
step by step instead. In this study, the writer mentioned that one of Kawashima’s characteristics is violent. Environment holds a role in build someone’s
characteristic and behavior. In Home, he stayed with people who were also sick because of the trauma that was left from being abused by their parents.
Kawashima also learned much from his friends’ behavior there because as the
67
writer already said, kid is easy to remember events in front of him and sometimes she imitates it. One of his friends that was also violent and who appeared when
he got hallucinations is Taku-chan. Here, Taku-chan killed his rabbit right before Kawashima’s eyes and for no reason p.23. Taku-chan’s behavior affected him to
be violent as he started to build a perception that violence is common. In Piercing, other factor that showed Kawashima as an egocentric
individual can be analyzed from the factor of environment. When he remembered his past life in Home, at the same time he felt what other kids felt toward their
parents, and suddenly it made him think that he must avenge for all the pain to the parents who had abused them. Actually, the situation and condition in Home had
already changed his way of thinking by concern to his own self; he thought of and did something based on his own decision. He could not think logically because he
thought that he had once stayed there and that he had the right to take part to avenge for all the anger. In short, he thought that he was the representative person
that could kill all parents who had already abused their children p.58. The desire to kill actually was not to help his friends but it was only words that suddenly
appeared in his mind.
