The Host is a novel written by Stephenie Meyer that talks about the life of Wanderer, an alien called “soul”. She is inserted into a girl named Melanie Stryder. She is supposed to give information about human existence to the Seekers, the calling for a soul that assigned to hunt humans. She then affected by Melanie’s memories about people she cared about and makes Wanderer decide to runaway to find them. This novel also tells about the motivation of Wanderer, the main character, to live with human. There are three problems that formulated in this study: the first is about the character of Wanderer, the second is about the conflicts of Wanderer, and the third is about Wanderer’s motivation based on Maslow hierarchy of needs. In discussing the character, Wanderer is described as a strong and brave soul. She has lived in eight different planets before coming to Earth. When she was inserted into Melanie’s body, she can handle her painful memories and take full control of her body. Her strength and bravery makes her has no fear to help human in emergency situation. She is also described as a smart and persistent soul when she faces obstacles. In order to find human’s hiding place, she never stop to walk despite her exhaustion and extreme weather on the desert. She also has good strategy when she has to talk and disguise souls by using her knowledge about soul’s attitude. To be treated as friend, she shows her care for human by join the raid to steals supplies of 55 food, drink and medicine s from soul’s civilization. She is also sincerely save their lives from Seeker’s hunt, although it also endangers her. In the second problem, the writer discusses the conflict of Wanderer. First, Wanderer has a clash of will with other souls, especially with a female Seeker. She refuses her will to relocate her into another host so she can gain the information about other human and kill Melanie. Since she cares about human’s live, including Melanie; she decides to runaway to look for human’s hiding place. Automatically, she also will be hunted by Seeker because she becomes a fugitive. Second, she also has a clash of will with human when she finally meets them. They think she is a Seeker in disguise and want to kill her. On the other hand, because she is a sincere soul, she keeps trying to shows that she truly wants to live with them because she considers they are her friends. Therefore, she always persists to find ways to face her conflicts. After finding the answer of the first and second problems, the writer uses Maslow’s motivation theory to find the third problem about Wanderer’s motivation to live with human. The writer associates her characteristics and her conflicts that influence her to fulfill her needs based on Maslow hierarchy of needs. Wandere r’s bravery and strength enable her to fight against threats from souls, especially from the Seeker. She is a smart soul for always find out the way to deal with either the conflict between her and Seeker or the conflict between her and humans.
