Implicit and explicit second language knowledge

With regard to the second aim of the current study, no significant different was observed in the acquisition of noun phrase by Indonesian EFL learners. It is, therefore concluded that; 1 as proficiency level increased, EFL learners knew more noun phrases, the majority of the noun phrases were identified accurately, particularly noun phrase pre-modification, while noun phrase post-modification were inaccurately identified, and 2 there were no significant different between the three different groups; freshmen, sophomore, and juniors in the acquisition of noun phrase although the percentages of result statistical data shows differences varied from each level. First, the findings suggest that the second language grammatical acquisition is very slow process as it involves a continuous process of construction. Second, the noun phrase modification tends to be acquired while the noun phrase modification by Indonesian EFL learners.

5.2 Suggestions

The reseach results are expected to give suggestions for further studies. The result of the current study on the developmental pattern of the acquisition of English noun phrase have revealed the patterns of noun phrase identification acquired by three groups of university students majoring in English language education. Nevertheless, further research is recommended to address some issues related to the current study so that a more comphrehensive understanding of the patterns of the acquisition of construction development in the acquisition of L2 grammar is reached. The main issue is related to the nature of research design adopted in the present study, i.e the cross sectional design. The cross sectional research design allows only macro-level analysis, i.e. charting aggregated patterns, but it cannot be used to track changes that happen in individual Cohen, Manion, and Morrison 2000. The general pattern of development is that L2 learners know more noun phrase pre-modification as their proficiency advances and they also render the majority of the noun phrase after identifying. The data show that in some of noun phrase pre-modification under study the increase in identifying noun phrase exceeded the increase the noun phrase post-modification. The cross-sectional design adopted does not allow the tracking of the exact path of English noun phrase that happen in the process of grammatical acquisition. The only research design that allows it is the longitudinal research design. At the moment a follow up the current study is possible and recommended. The data of the current study were collected in April-May 2016 and the subjects in the group were university students majoring in English language education at the time of the data collection. The second issue concerns both trimming and spreading phenomena or the sources of under-representation and over-representation. Research on some sources of under-representation and over-representation of word meanings has been conducted and documented in the research literature, e.g. transfer of colonial range or patterns e.g. Kellerman, 1977, 1983; Bikup, 1992; Lennon, 1996, and divergence e.g. Dagut, 1977; Bikup, 1992; Jiang, 2002. The other sources seem to have received inadequate attention in second language acquisition research. 5.3 Pedagogical Implication

The results of the current study that have pedagogical implication are primarily the developmental pattern of the acquisition of English noun phrase by three different groups of university students majoring in English language education. There is no significant different between freshmen to juniors. It is, therefore, suggested that the teaching of English at the freshmen and junior level should aim not only to help learner acquire more the construction of noun phrase pre-modification but also post-modification. In addition, the interview results also describe that score oriented is practiced by mostly EFL learners. Most learners were affected to get great score that made them try to finish the learning class every semester without improve their structure competence. So, the materials in learning class is not being procedural knowledge and useless for their next experiences. It is also related to implicit and explicit knowledge. The learners tend use more characteristics of implicit knowledge, especially the using of intuition to identify the noun phrase in a whole sentences. They tried to guess the correct noun phrase on written test. The result implies that the acquisition of the English noun phrase is very slow process as it involves a continuous process of construction. The learners can start to choice the noun headword before decide the noun phrase in sentences. The classification of two kinds of noun phrase modification which include the pre-modification and post-modification will help the learners to remember the component easier. Last, the second result of written test in rendering the noun phrase also describes that Indonesian EFL learners are influenced by native language to identify and render the noun phrase. They need internalization of second language, how to master the concept of language. There were so many participants under study are still confuse about the contras patterns of English and Indonesian noun phrase. Without the repetition of noun phrase materials, they cannot remember well in the next time, sometimes fading out. So, for Indonesian learners, especially university students majoring in English language education, they can use the tips above to identify the noun phrase.
