3. Characteristics of English Learning Materials for Grade X
Students of Beauty Study Program
Based on the results of the materials evaluation, the developed materials are considered appropriate. The developed materials have the characteristics
as described in the following paragraphs. To give a brief picture about the content of the unit, there is a title at the
very beginning. The title of the unit is derived from the expression of the text of each unit i.e. She Wears her Hair in a Fishtail Bun, The Contest will
be Held on Saturday 14

and Congratulations Following the title of the unit is a picture that reflects the title. Then, it is followed by a brief
description of the unit ’s objectives. The unit’s objectives are presented in
the form of paragraphs with guided questions that lead the students to find out the answer by themselves.
The next is Warm-Up. The task is designed to build background knowledge of the students. The tasks of each unit are various. In Unit 1, the
students are to fill in the blanks based on the pictures, while in Unit 2 and 3, there are pictures and some questions that lead the students to the topic of
the unit. The main part of the unit is Lesson Proper. The tasks are divided into
two sections; spoken and written. The four skills are all integrated. In the spoken section
Let’s Listen and Speak, the students are given the tasks that help them to perform oral communication, whereas in the written section
Let’s Read and Write, the tasks are designed to help the students to produce written texts.
The last part of the unit is Reinforcement. The reinforcement covers Homework, Review, Reflection and Vocabulary list. The Homework aims to
give students further chances to learn outside the class. The Review is provided
to check the students’ understanding about what they have learned by doing some tasks. Following the Review is the Reflection. The Reflection
is required to check the students’ level of understanding. To end the unit, there is a Vocabulary List that provides the students with some new words
and their Indonesian meaning. The final draft of the materials is in the Appendix.
