2. Identification of the Problems

The researcher conducted several activities in identifying the problems of the teaching and learning process of English vocabulary mastery at the grade IV of SD N Gambiranom. Interviews and classroom observation were done to identify the field problems. The researcher observed the English teaching and learning process of grade IV class. The researcher also interviewed the English teacher and the children of grade four. Lastly, the researcher conducted a pre- test to know how far the students’ ability in mastering the vocabulary was. The situation of the teaching and learning process in grade IV class could be seen from the vignette below. The vignette was the result of the observation during the teaching and learning process before the actions of the research were implemented. It describes the teaching and learning process and how the classroom activities were conducted by the teacher during the English lesson. It also shows the students’ attitudes and behaviors toward the teaching and learning of vocabulary mastery.
