C. Subject Contents

In order to get the subject content, the need survey was conducted to 45 semester IV students of English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University. Based on the survey, there are eight most interesting themes to be discussed. Those themes are deducted into topics which are presented in these ten units which are as follows: No. Themes Unit Description 1 Education Unit 1. Cut and Paste The topic for this unit is plagiarism. In this unit, students are encouraged to express their opinion on certain education issue which is plagiarism. 2 Entertainment Unit 2. Sneak Preview The topic for this unit is movie. In this unit, students are encouraged to express their opinion of certain movie in a well delivered speech. 3 Health Unit 3. Fit or Fat The topic in this unit is the risks and benefits of coffee. In this unit, students are encouraged to deliver persuasive message about the given topic. 4 Sport Unit 4. I Love This Game The topic in this unit is sport games. In this unit, students are encouraged to demonstrate the process of giving and asking information through conducting interview about sport games. 5 Travel and Tourism Unit 5. Sun, Sea and Sand The topic in this unit is issue on travel and tourism. In this unit, students are encouraged to demonstrate the appropriate public speaking skill that would be necessary while having job interview. 6 Environment Unit 6. Climate Change The topic in this unit is cause and effect of climate change. In this unit, students are encouraged to perform effective problem solving activity to environmental problems when holding group discussion. Unit 7. Pop Culture The topic in this unit is popular culture. In this unit, students are encouraged to conduct a survey on the issues of popular culture effectively. 7 Culture Unit 8. Meet the Metrosexual The topic in this unit metrosexuality. In this unit, students are encouraged to deliver a well organized oral presentation about metrosexual issues in a good manner. Unit 9. A Thing Called Love This unit consists of general issues on love. In this unit, students are encouraged to construct argument as the affirmative and negative ideas on love and relationship issues. 8 Love and Relationship Unit 10. Will You Marry Me? The topic in this unit is same sex marriage. In this unit, students are encouraged to deliver arguments and ideas in debate practice under the given theme. The designed materials consist of two parts, which are Before the Class materials and In-Class materials.

1. Multimedia Materials

This part is intended as a preparation to the materials and activity that students will have in the speaking class, thus it is done outside the speaking class. By working on this material students are encourage to develop their thinking skill, gain wider knowledge, furthermore, to promote their independent learning. The materials are presented in form of slide show which is put in compact disc CD with a user friendly operation. This part consists of two sections as follow: a. Reading Section The first section is reading section in which students read short text and answer questions related to the text. This section consists of three parts as follow: 1 Before You Read This is a pre-reading activity which purpose is to activate student’s background knowledge on the topics discussed which consists of pre- reading questions and vocabulary items. 2 World in Words This is a whilst-reading activity in which students are encouraged to comprehend on the content of the text through answering questions. 3 Comprehension Questions This is a post-reading activity which checks student’s comprehension on the text they read and encourage students to relate the content of the text with their knowledge. b. Listening Section The second section is listening section in which students listen to audio materials and answer questions related to the materials they hear. This section is also intended as a model for students’ pronunciation in class activity.
