c. Listing Subject Contents

This study was aimed to design a set of integrated speaking materials. As it was suggested by the respondents of the needs survey, the writer needs to design a set of materials with interesting topics which integrate all four language skills. Therefore, besides using the integrated language instruction, the writer uses the content-based instruction in which the language learning is structured around a certain topic or theme. Some respondents suggested putting the reading and reading skills outside the classroom, so that they did not interfere the learning of speaking skills. Therefore, the writer did not only develop materials which were used in the classroom, but also multimedia materials to be done before the speaking class which covered reading and listening skills. The contents of the designed materials were determined based on the pre- design survey and the competencies and indicators which have been developed. The subject contents of the designed materials are as follows: 1 Multimedia materials These materials was intended as a preparation to the activity that students would have in the speaking class, thus it was done outside the speaking class. The skills covered in the multimedia materials were listening and reading skills. By working on this material, students were encouraged to develop their listening and reading skills as well as their thinking skill, gain wider knowledge, furthermore, to promote their independent learning. The materials were presented in form of power point show which was put in a compact disc in CD-ROM format with a user friendly operation. This part consists of two sections as follow: a Reading Section The first section is reading section in which students read short articles and answer questions related to the text. This section consists of three parts as follows: 1 Before You Read This is a pre-reading activity which purpose is to activate student’s background knowledge on the topics discussed which consists of pre-reading questions and vocabulary items. 2 World in Words This is a whilst-reading activity in which students read the text. They are encouraged to comprehend the content of the text through answering questions. 3 Comprehension Questions This is a post-reading activity which checks student’s comprehension on the text they read and encourage students to relate the content of the text with their knowledge. b Listening Section The second section is listening section in which students listen to audio materials and answer questions related to the materials they heard. This section is also intended as a model for students’ pronunciation in class activity. 1 Before You Listen This is a pre-listening activity which is aimed to activate student’s background knowledge on the topic discussed which consists of pre-listening questions and vocabulary items. 2 Sound of the World This is a whilst-listening activity through information gaps activity. 3 What in Words This is a post-listening activity which checks student’s comprehension on the text they listen through guessing the meaning of the words based on the text they hear. 4 Chant Along This part is aimed as a model of student’s pronunciation. The learning process conducted in the classroom covered two skills, which were speaking and writing. Yet, the speaking process is being the main focus of the learning process. The classroom materials consisted of four parts which are described as follows: a Warming Up The purpose of this part is to activate student’s knowledge on the materials in the multimedia materials. This part consists of discussion of multimedia materials and also games which serves as warmer before entering the main activity. b Express Your Mind This part consists of theory that prepares them to the upcoming activity. The theory is in the form of list of useful expressions and basic theory of Public Speaking. c Speak Out Loud This is the main activity of the speaking class in which students are encourage to practice their public speaking skill by relating the knowledge they had from the whole reading and listening activities with their own knowledge through delivering oral presentation and in depth discussion about a certain issue and also other various activities such as games and role play. In order to sum up all the contents of the designed materials, the writer would like to give a review of which. The designed materials in this study were divided into three parts.
