Pulsa Tabloid Edition 163
To obtain the answer of the possible reasons for code-switching that is most frequently used by the writers in the feature article of Pulsa tabloid edition
163, the researcher used the seven reasons suggested by Hoffmann 1991 and the verification of one of the writers of Pulsa tabloid. The researcher discovered that
there were only three possible reasons that could be identified out of seven see table 4.2. Below, the researcher gave a detailed explanation on the possible
reasons discovered in the feature article of Pulsa tabloid edition 163.
a. A switch can occur when someone is talking about a particular topic
In the feature article of Pulsa tabloid edition 163, the researcher discovered that there were 250 occurrences for this reason. To explain the finding,
the researcher used Hoffmann’s theory 1991. According to Hoffmann 1991: 115, “talking about a particular topic may cause a switch, either because of lack
of facility in the relevant register or because certain items trigger off various connotations which are linked to experiences in a particular language.”
Sometimes, especially in Indonesia, there are English words that do not have the exact meaning in Bahasa Indonesia. This condition makes someone to adopt the
English words. Same as in the feature article of Pulsa tabloid, there were English
words that do not have the exact meaning in Bahasa Indonesia. In the
verification of one of the writers of Pulsa tabloid, the English words used in the feature article
of Pulsa tabloid were familiar to the readers. It meant that the writers of Pulsa

tabloid were trying to serve the readers with the familiar terms and these were in English and there was no need to translate the terms into Bahasa Indonesia
because the readers had known the meaning of the English terms. To have a clear illustration of this reason, the researcher provided five examples that were taken
from the feature article of Pulsa tabloid edition 163. 1
“Mulai dari kemampuannya menampilkan album art, pilihan equalizer,
pengaturan playlist hingga menambahkan fitur stereo widening layaknya ponsel walkman sony ericsson.” 2009: 4
2
2009: 15 From the five examples above, it became clear that those five English
words equalizer, online, bluetooth, capacitive, and internet in the feature
article of Pulsa tabloid edition 163 did not have the exact term in Bahasa Indonesia
. It may become the reason why the writers of Pulsa tabloid used English words in their writing.
