139 Appendix L: The General Description of the Designed Materials THE GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE DESIGNED MATERIALS The title of this study is “a Set of Integrated English Instructional Materials Based on a Cooperative Learning Approach for the Sixth Grade Students of SD Kanisius Kanutan ”. This study is aimed to make a set of designed materials that is expected to help the sixth grade students of SD Kanisius Kanutan to learn and develop English skills based on the principals of Cooperative Learning. In this part, the writer will describe three matters; they are background, content, and purpose.

A. Background

The composing of the designed materials is based on important factors. One of them is that English is one of the important subjects that must be mastered by the students. In this case are the sixth grade students of SD Kanisius Kanutan. They are children who are developing in many aspects. Generally, each student has different characteristics and the ways to learn English. The children like grouping and playing together. The teachers should aware of the students’ characteristics in order to develop the students’ performance. However, this is difficult to be applied because there is limitation of English Materials and teaching learning hours in the classroom. These two factors become the main obstacles in teaching-learning process. Dealing with the fact, the writer tried to design a set of instructional materials that integrate listening, reading, speaking, and writing based on principals of Cooperative Learning that challenge the sixth grade students of SD Kanisius Kanutan to learn together in groups, help each other, and share the knowledge to the other friends in order to achieve the collective goals.

B. Content

The designed materials consist of eight units. Each unit is divided into four main parts, namely: Let’s Get Started, Let’s Do It Together, Let’s Play Together, 140 and What Have You Learnt?. The time allocation for each meeting is 2 x 40 minutes 80 minutes.

1. Let’s Get Started Let’s get started

is a pre-activity to motivate the students’ interest in a topic and to direct the students to the main topic that is going to be learnt. This part also activates the students’ knowledge about a topic of each unit.

2. Let’s Do It Together Let’s Do It Together

is the main part of the materials with tasks and activities in groups that can develop students’ performance individually and in groups. In this part, Let’s discuss contains theories to be learnt in groups. This is aimed to develop the students’ ability to interact with friends in group and to achieve the collective goals. It’s time to do the quiz is used to measure the students’ performance individually after the students learn a kind of topic in group.

3. Let’s Play Together Let’s Play Together

is a tool for the students to learn a topic in the form of games that are modified related to the topic of each unit. The kinds of games that are used in the designed materials are group game types or games that involve some students in groups. This part is aimed to make learning atmosphere become comfortable and interesting for the students. This also makes the students feel relax in learning English. 4. What Have You Learnt? What Have You Learnt? is a post-teaching activity of each unit that contains reflection activity about what the students have learnt from the unit. The other function of this part is to remind the students the materials that they have learnt. What the students do in this activity is to write about what the students have learnt and to answer the questions about the topic of each unit. 141 The units and topics in the designed materials are as follows. C. Purpose

The purposes of the designed materials are to help the students to learn and develop English skills through interaction with other students so that the students also have social relationship with their teaching-learning domain. The designed materials help the students to learn comfortably, relax, and to achieve the collective goals through groups learning activities. Finally, the students are able to understand the materials individually. Hopefully, the designed materials can develop the four English skills; those are listening, reading, speaking, and writing skill. In order to achieve these objectives, the writer composed each unit based on the principals of Cooperative Learning that will be reflected in the instructions. Yogyakarta, September 2, 2008 F. Studi ini bertujuan untuk membuat seperangkat materi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang dapat membantu siswa kelas 6 enan SD Kanisius Kanutan untuk mempelajari dan mengembangkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris berdasarkan prinsip-prinsip ‘Cooperative Learning’. Pada bagian ini, penulis akan menjelaskan 3 tiga hal berikut: latar belakang, isi, dan tujuan materi yang disusun oleh penulis.
