For example: The Japanese word
“Samurai” is described as “Japanese aristocracy from eleventh to nineteenth century”.
iv. Synonym
This strategy is used when the translators use the more or less the same meaning for the Source Language SL.
For example:
SL: What a cute baby you’ve got
TL: Alangkah lucunya bayi Anda
The word “cute” is translated into “lucu” because they are synonym.
Cute is an attractive child, and Lucu is a child who is attracting people to stare at them. The relation between Cute and Lucu is an attractive
child to get the other’s attention.
v. Official Translation
This strategy is usually applied in the formal translation. Therefore, the translators translate a text from another language by using a
manual book “Pedoman Pengindonesiaan Nama dan Kata Asing” published by Pusat Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa, Depdikbud
R.I.
For example: “Read-only memory” is translated into “Memori Simpan Tetap”
vi. Reduction and Expansion
Reduction means reducing the Source Language SL component. For example:
The word “automobile” is translated into ”mobil”. Here, the word
element “auto” is omitted.
The expansion is the opposite of reduction. Here, the word component is expanded in the Target Language TL.
For example: The word
“Whale” is translated into “Ikan Paus”. If there is no expansion in the TL, then it means Pope.
vii. Addition
In this strategy, the translator gives more information for the Target Language TL readers. It may come in the text, bottom of the text, or
the end of the text. For example:
SL: The skin, which is hard and scaly, is greyish in color, thus
helping to camouflage it from predators when underwater. TL:
Kulitnya, yang keras dan bersisik, berwarna abu-abu. Dengan demikian, kulit ini membantunya berkamuflase,
menyesuaikan diri
dengan keadaan
lingkungan untuk
menyelamatkan diri dari predator, hewan pemangsa, jika berada dalam air. Suryawinata 2003:75
viii. Omission
Omission means deleting a word from Source Language SL in the Target Language TL text. This strategy is used when the words
meaning is not really important for the development of the text. For example:
SL: “Sama dengan raden ayu ibunya,” katanya lirih
TL: “Just like her mother,”she whispered
Here, the word “Raden Ayu” is not translated in the Target Language
TL
ix. Modulation
Modulation is a strategy to translate the phrases, clauses, or sentences. Here, the translators use the different point of view to see the
