318 important, not only that it proves that the industry has gained competitive advantage, but also it
will strengthen the adoption of environmental management for the industry. As Porter has mentioned, the strategy of a company to cover international market will make the company more
competitive compared to a company which strategy is only covering local market. Exposing companies to global market will surely make them more competitive.
Another thing that Porter missed and that has not been mentioned by previous researches is the role of non-governmental organizations. Again global non-governmental organizations with their
financial capacity and skills prove to be able to impose the adoption of green production. In some cases, financial aids and followed by transfer of knowledge can facilitate companies to be
greener. Although regulations are important, the result of the research shows that what is expected from
government is not issuing and enforcing environmental regulations. The most important thing is socializing the importance of adopting environmental management and of course exposing
industries to global market so that global demand will push batik industry to be more environmentally friendly.
The role of government is also been waited for enhancing the sophistication of supporting industries such as the production of natural dyes. Research and development agencies such as
universities play an important role not only in terms of natural dyes but also in the production process of batik using natural dyes. These agencies can also play an important role for helping
companies to position the green batik product in the market, such as the positioning of environmental friendly cosmetic products and hybrid vehicles. Although consumers pay more for
the last two products, still they want to buy it because of their positioning in the market. In the term used by Wagner 2007, it related to the image of the company. In other words, how the
image of environmental friendly can make the products belong to high-end products. This is for responding the low demand for natural dyed batik product from domestic market.
Last but not least, education to local communities is very important so that the relationship between the poluted companies with local communities is not merely transactional. Local
communities do not care for environment as long as the polluted companies open employment opportunities for them. Short-term-sighted interest can be overcome and one of the efforts is
through environmental education. Again government and non-governmental organizations such as educational institutions and developmental agencies play a very important role for this
purpose.
