In this case, the backgrounds which matter are culture and knowledge. Some things in ST translated into TT are found to be crucial, such as tungku arang, warung tenda sederhana, and gerobak dorong. How the things are used in Indonesia is culturally different from what TT readers use the things intended with the same purpose. The respondents, especially the Americans, do not have those things in their country. They might have them with the same functions, but in different shape and material. However, the Americans do not always know nothing. They can think the text is informative if they already experience eating a plate of Bakmi Jawa in its food stall. That is why background of knowledge also gives effect on how the respondents understand the text.
