2. Considering the goal, listing the topic, and stating the general purposes
for teaching each topic
The next step was composing the goal, topic, and purposes of the materials design based on Kemp’s Model. In order to make it, the researcher used the
Competence Standard and Basic Competence in Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan KTSP as the goal of the teaching and learning activities. The
researcher considered that Communicative Language Teaching method and information gathering technique were the appropriate ways in assisting the
students since they needed to be encouraged in speaking and expressing their ideas through effective communication activities. The students needed to be more
active in group discussions to collect information through their friends. They could share their opinions through their friends in order to build their confidence.
The researcher set the purposes of the learning so that the students are able to communicate in simple routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of
information on familiar and routine communications especially in speaking class. There were four goals for the materials designed:
a. The students are able to communicate using English in formal and informal
ways. b.
The students are able to exchange information to construct and comprehend their new knowledge.
c. The students are able to develop their motivations in learning English.

d. The students are able to develop their confidence to participate in teaching
and learning process in the class actively. Based on the goals, the researcher tried to correlate the topic based on
KTSP curriculum. The researcher decided four major topics of the design, namely Making New Friends, Sharing Your Experience, Giving Instruction, and
Describing Something . Those topics were designed to fulfill the students’ needs in
order to train their abilities in speaking. They were introductions, making a new friend, invitation, making request and permission, sharing and expressing feeling,
sharing past experience, telling story, describing procedures, describing people, describing places, and reporting news.
