3. Composing Syllabus Type
This step belonged to Yalden’s model. The syllabus must be suitable for the target designed. It had to cover the goals and objectives as the basic of
materials designed. It clarified the contents and the topic which were needed by the teacher and the students to improve their communicative competences. The
step was aimed to develop preliminary form of product. When the syllabus has done, the researcher could develop it into the first product of speaking materials.
In this step, the researcher tried to create such kind of communicative syllabus which had many speaking activities inside. The commucative syllabus
was designed by considering the competence standard and basic competence in KTSP curriculum. The researcher put pre-activities, main activities, and post-
activities in deep correlation each other so that the students could learn in focus. In this stage, the researcher consulted the teaching materials to the classroom
teacher and three speaking lectures to gain first feedback of the teaching materials.
4. Conducting Pre-Assessment
This step belonged to Kemp’s model. After the preparation, the researcher did some teaching simulations. There were two teaching simulations on May 22,
2013 and May 29, 2013. There were two kinds of materials that were taught, describing places, asking for, and giving directions. The materials were chosen
because it had correlation with previous teaching and learning materials about “Describing Process”.

In the process of the teaching simulation, the students were passive at the pre-activities part, the students did not want to answer the questions asked by the
researcher directly. However, after the researcher played a video and they were asked to give some comments on it, they became more active to share their
opinions. In the main activities, the students were asked to do the assignments in group. They had to share it in English. Surprisingly, they spoke English quite well
in group discussion although in some cases they still used mix languages, English- Indonesian. When they were asked to present their results, they came to the front
of class one by one and they could present their work better.
