1. Conducting Need survey

The first step belongs to Yalden’s model. In this step the researcher did the research and information collecting procedures. The researcher used survey in the form of class observations, questionnaires, and interviews as the techniques to gain the data. At the first time, the researcher did class observations and fulfill the observation checklist during the teaching and learning activities. The researcher did the observation in X-E class.

a. The Result of the Class Observation

The class observation was held in X-E class during the teaching and learning activities. The researcher found that the teacher and the students rarely used English as their classroom language. They did not have the English textbook or English module as their study references. In some cases, the teacher used Indonesian to explain the materials and the students often used Indonesian to ask some questions. The teacher gave opportunities to the students expressing their ideas and sharing their opinions during the teaching and learning process. However, the students were still passive in expressing their ideas since they were confused to speak English. Moreover, the teacher always gave reading and writing exercises to the students in every meeting. The activities made the teaching and learning process becoming monotonous.

b. The Result of the Questionnaire

The researcher distributed the questionnaires to the twenty five 25 students in X-E class. All of the students filled the questionnaires and gave their 49 answers in the close ended and the open ended form. From the result of the questionnaire, the researcher found that all of the participants 100 agreed that English-speaking skill was important to support their teaching and learning activities in the class. All of the students 100 realized that English-speaking skill was interesting to be learnt. However, when the students were asked about the used of English in the classroom discussion, there was only 20 5 students used English actively. It had correlation with the level of English proficiency of the students in mastering English. 92 of the students agreed that they were still in the Basic English level. Moreover, the data also showed that all of the participants 100 had some difficulties in learning English especially in speaking skill. The researcher made a ranking of English speaking skill difficulties and found that majority of the students got difficulties in 1 using grammar, 2 lacking of vocabulary knowledge, 3 pronouncing some difficult words, 4 conducting a good conversation, and 5 using expressions in certain conversation. Two students 8 said that 50 they were satisfied with the teaching and learning activity. The reasons were because the teaching and learning activities were good and easy to understand. Thirteen students 52 said the teaching and learning activities were fair because the English teacher gave a clear explanation to the students. While, there were ten students 40 said that the teaching and learning activities were bad because the teacher just gave reading and writing exercises. There were many boring activities and reading assignments every meeting. In the last part of the questionnaire, the researcher asked the preferences of the topics that needed to be learned and the teaching and learning activities which motivated them to learn English. By having a group discussions, they could encourage themselve to practice English actively.
