43 The total mean from all the participants was used to show whether the materials designed were good enough. It was acceptable or not. The assessment of the mean was classified as follows. 1-2 : the designed materials were not appropriate and not acceptable 2.1-3 : the designed materials needed revision 3.1-5 : the designed materials were appropriate and acceptable The researcher synchronized the questionnaires’ result with the observations’ result to get the valid data. If there was a problem, the researcher had to tries to find the solution of the problems immediately and do some revisions.

F. Research Procedures

In this research there were some steps conducted which had correlation with the research framework. Since this research belonged to education research and development, so there were six steps which were conducted by the researcher.

1. Research and Information Collecting

In this stage, the researcher clarified the problems of speaking materials which were taught in the tenth grade of SMA BOPKRI 2 Yogyakarta by doing the observation and interviews. The researcher collected the information of the educational needs for speaking materials. In addition, the researcher did the review of literature to gain information and additional knowledge about the best speaking materials designed for the tenth grade students of SMA BOPKRI 2 44 Yogyakarta. Realizing the importance of the preliminary data, this step belonged to the need analysis step.

2. Planning

In this stage, the researcher was going to decide the objectives and the target of the research. The researcher considered the goals, topics, contents, and the purposes of teaching and learning speaking with information gathering technique. The researcher was going to plan the time and the research activities to obtain the goal. Then, the researcher also tried to design and collect basic materials of the product. The data collection could be used as the sources to compose learning objective. It had to reflect the characteristics, interests, needs, and the competences of the subject designed. The learning objectives must be specific and compatible. It had to fulfill the goal of the teaching-learning procedures.

3. Developing Preliminary Form of Product

In the beginning of this step, the researcher was going to select the syllabus type which was appropriate for the participants. The researcher made the outline of the preparation instructional of speaking materials, handbooks, and evaluation devices. The researcher also created the English speaking materials which used in the field testing in the next stage. The first speaking product would be created here. Moreover, the researcher would do the pre-assessment in this stage. This process was aimed to determine the students’ background of 45 knowledge about the topic in the term of pre-assessment test and observation activities.
