Attentive Sophie’s Characteristics a. A Dreamer

49 In the novel, Sophie is described as an attractive person who is gorgeous, good looking, talkative, and an easy-going person. Everyone who meets her definitely admits that she is pretty and attractive. Even sometimes others know her because she looked like an actress or a TV star as quoted below: “You know. My friend. The one you met in Jamie’s that time.” “Oh, her The one who looks like Catherine Zeta-Jones.” “…. People often said that about Sophie. Before that, when CZJ was still a B- list television star, they had said Elizabeth Taylor – ….” 8-9 An attractive person is always considered as a chic or stylish person. So is Sophie that she is considered as an attractive person as she is very chic on her style. It is showed by what her mother says on her: “Don’t you look nice? You’ve always been so good at that English eccentric look.” 13 And as her best friend, Natasha also admitted that Sophie is a beautiful woman in which Natasha always envies on her. It is stated through Natasha’s thought: “She had come to terms with the fact that, no matter how many facials she had or designer clothes she bought, her friend would always be prettier than her, always have an adoring boyfriend on her arm.” 10 Sophie knows that she is used to having nice looking that makes every one turn their head looking at her. And being attractive is Sophie’s contentment on her self that finally she has something to be proud on. In the novel, it is written that people always have a look at her: “She stood at the arrivals gate, conscious of other people staring at her, wondering who the excited girl Sophie still couldn’t bring herself to think of herself as a woman was.” 146 Besides of having good looking, being a talkative is one of Sophie’s attractiveness. She is used to chatting with other people easily even with someone she 50 already met. She can easily adapt herself to the situation or the topic she has in conversation except in politics in which Sophie dislikes most. It can be seen from the quotation below: “Now Sophie was on a subject she felt confident about. She started gabbling about Jamie versus Gordon Ramsay versus Rick Stein. Peter listened and nodded and occasionally asked questions, apparently fascinated.” 370 The way she speaks and the language she uses make others get interested and like to chat with her. She cleverly knows how to make her friends become happy by raising their hearts. She also always tries to be friendly by speaking with her style and creating warm atmosphere through her joke. “…. Lainey It’s this amazing kitchen mixer. Nigella swears by them. God, I’d kill for one. And look at the colour? Isn’t it cute?” 113 “But apart from the moment of happiness, the journey was a great laugh. They played a silly game of I Spy and gossiped about various people in the office disloyally Sophie told Olly about Fay and Mr. Cheesy Dick, which made him roar with laughter.” 275 Another aspect that makes others consider Sophie as an attractive person is that she is an easy-going person. She is always keen on accompanying her friends whenever and wherever they ask as can be seen in the quotation below: “Another time she accompanied him to a grand party at the Garrick Club in Convent Garden, which was full of MPs. Olly introduced her to lots of them and she flirted happily.” 95 As an easy-going person, Sophie always enjoys herself and tries not to worry or take a deep mind of her life. It is like what other says in the novel about Sophie comparing with Natasha. “Why can’t you be more like Sophie, living for the moment instead of always worrying about appearance?” Nikolai yelled …. “And that’s the difference 51 between the two of you. …. Sophie enjoys herself. You don’t.” 90-91 Sophie doesn’t always keep on a thing much. She likes to have free choices in passing her own life as described in her conversation with Olly who had become her new boyfriend after her previous relationship had broken up. “Why not?” Olly shrugged. “I don’t believe in wasting time. If something’s not working for you, then get out. Move on.” Sophie looked at him with interest. “That’s exactly what I think.” 159 From what have been quoted and described above, it can be brought to a close statement that Sophie is an attractive person that she can attract ones’ attention on her and get many friends.

f. Talkative

Sophie is a kind of chatty person. She is very friendly and she tends to be an easy – going person that she can adapt and place herself well in a new community. She is able to talk a lot to someone new who she just already meets. For example, she can force herself well and keep staying there to communicate with new people from the party who are Olly’s friends even though she doesn’t interest and knows nothing in politics. It is described in the quotations as follows: For the rest of the dinner, Sophie was bored witless. They tried to include her but they were talking about education, the next election, foreign policy in Sudan, a bunch of people she’d never heard of. She felt like asking what they’d thought of the pictures in Heat of Ger radically slimmed down again, but she decided she’d better not. 369 Now Sophie was on a subject she felt confident about. She started gabbling about Jamie versus Gordon Ramsay versus Rick Stein. Peter listened and nodded and occasionally asked questions, apparently fascinated. 370
