CHAPTER V CONCLUSION, SUGGESTIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS
This chapter converses the conclusion as well as suggestions and recommendations after conducting this study. The conclusion concerns with the
analysis of the preceding chapter whereas the suggestions and recommendations are directed for the future researchers and for teachers who want to make the
implementation of If I were You for the reference in teaching English.
A. Conclusion
After analyzing the novel as mentioned in the previous chapter, there are some findings drawn from the analysis. The findings are directed to answer the two main
problems discussed in this study; those findings are: First, Sophie is described as an ambitious, dreamer, attentive, compassionate,
and attractive person. On the other hand, Natasha is described as follows: independent, attentive, workaholic, lonely, introvert and dishonest.
Second, it is analyzed from the novel that there are factors that influence Sophie and Natasha’s decision in finding their self-identity within their life. The
factors are generally classified as the internal factors which come from their thoughts, emotions or feelings, and desires, and as the external factors coming from their
outside such as their family, friendship, problems they face, and society or their environment.
85
Besides of the findings, it can also be drawn conclusion from the conducted analysis. Since the novel used in this study concerns with friends envy and has a title
of If I were You, it can be terminated that the author wants to underline the needs of a person acts and perceives life by him or herself. Here, the author gives the case of
Sophie and Natasha’s struggle to find their truly self-identities trough their friendship and their relationship within the society. From the beginning, their desires of being
another person made them get pleasure, but then they finally realize that their own life is worth enough to pass, and they find their own pleasure of being themselves.
B. Suggestions for Teaching Implementation
For the English teachers, it is suggested that they may take the novel as the references for their teaching materials. Here, they may make use of the novel to teach
their students the English skills, for examples for teaching reading and speaking. In this part, the implementation of the novel will be focused as the material references in
teaching Extensive Reading I and Speaking IV for PBI students of Sanata Dharma University. It is because Extensive Reading I requires the students’ comprehension of
appreciation in paraphrasing the story and critical thoughts. Extensive Reading is directed and appropriate for high or advanced level students since students at
advanced level must have gained some improvements in the knowledge of related subjects, which can support their reading skill 199.
There are four basic English skills that should be mastered in order to be fluent in English. Those four basic English skills are listening, reading, speaking, and
85
86
writing. For teaching and learning reading, there are two kinds of reading. According to a book named Teaching English as a Second Language: Technique and Procedures,
the two kinds of reading are Intensive Reading and Extensive Reading. In the book, it is said that in Intensive Reading the students are expected to give their focus on the
linguistic features. In Extensive Reading I, the students are expected to be able to comprehend and get the meaning of the whole text James, 156.
Learning Extensive reading is very useful for the students. It is for the reason that students need to read the whole text carefully in Extensive reading and then try to
think deeper by comprehending the specific information of the text. Therefore Extensive Reading I is intended for students in order to be able to employ their
competence to understand the context of the reading text. Another implementation will be focused on Speaking IV. The novel of If I
were You is suitable for teaching speaking for the fourth semester students because it is the appropriate level for students to enhance their fluency both in speaking and
debating their ideas in group discussion. As what has been said by Paulstone and Bruder in their book 56 that speaking is a form of communicative interaction
activity in which the goals of it is depending on the teaching point. The teaching point firstly is simply to get meaning across or to be able to communicate some referential
meaning in the target language. The exercise of it is called communicative performance. The second, teaching point is getting meaning across in socially
acceptable way and typically these exercises contain culturally relevant information. Therefore in speaking class, students should be involved actively, be encouraged and
87
challenged to speak. Here, the teacher should be able to provide interesting topics to provoke students’ motivation to speak actively.
The appropriate learning activity for the class is group discussion, in which a group discussion requires the students to work in a team and discuss the topic and the
questions given by the teacher so that they will get use to speaking English. Then debate can facilitate students to represent their own ideas or opinions of the reading
text. They will be challenged to express their opinions or ideas and defend them with logical reasons.
There are some advantages that can be achieved trough debate. The students will be able to represent their own ideas and opinions about a certain topic using
appropriate language in which they can be agree or disagree upon the topic. Then the students will be able to analyze deeper about the topic being discussed and make
conclusion on it. It can also encourage students to have critical thinking on problems and the solution upon the given topic so that they can enhance their competence in
critical and logical thinking.
C. Recommendation of If I were You for Further Researchers
If I were You is a kind of popular and interesting novel. The story of the novel entails the human real life that has many possible aspects to discuss. And one of them
that can be suggested for the further researchers is to look into the novel from the same topic of this study but by focusing on the different case. If this study concerns
with the factors that influence Sophie and Natasha’s decision to search their self-
88
identity, then the next researchers may discuss the study on how Sophie and Natasha take decision towards their searching for self-identity related to the internal and
external factors that have been analyzed in this study. It can be analyzed from the way Sophie and Natasha carry out themselves upon the factors that influence them in
order to be close to their self-identity.
