It bothers her friendship and reduces her attention and her responsibility on her job that finally makes her get fired.

B. Factors that Influence Sophie and Natasha’s Decision to Search for Their Self-Identity

During the story of the novel, Sophie and Natasha are trying to figure out their self identity. They began to search their self-identity when they had been teenagers and had known the thoughts of what the real life that they have to face is. They become better persons in the end of the story. What they have experienced during their days since they were teenagers until being adults make them realize what kind of person actually they want to be. Sophie and Natasha change to be better persons after they have passed their sufferings. Trough their friendship, they can help each other and that their friendship has been successfully tested. It has been known that every human needs to actualize themselves, and to be 63 admitted in their society. Therefore, it is necessary that every one knows what actually their identities are so that they can place themselves properly in their environment or their society and can take their roles well. From the novel, it can be outlined that there are many factors which bring influences on Sophie and Natasha’s searching for their identities in their life. Here this study is going to classify those factors to be two different aspects. The first is internal factors which include Sophie and Natasha’s thoughts, feelings, and motivations or desires towards her life. Then the second factors come from the outside of the two main characters’ selves. Those can come up from the interaction of the two main characters with their society, their family or friends’ roles, and also their life’s demands or the problems they are facing. At this point, this study is going to employ the approach and theories mentioned in chapter two. The reason this study apply psychological approach because it is needed to analyze the two main characters’ self identity. Psychological Approach concerns with one’s mental and physical experiences that shape his or her personality. It analyzes how a person mentally and physically grows from an infant to an adult, how a person shape his or her self-concept, self-actualization, self-orientation as well self- identity influenced by him or herself and others. Here, Psychological Approach has presented in many theories that some of them would be used in this study. Those theories are Psychoanalytic Theory and Psychodynamic Theory which are used to look into the internal factors of the two main characters’ searching for self-identity, Phenomenological Theory and Theory of Friendship which are employed to analyze the external factors of the two main characters’ searching for self-identity, and the 64 last is Theory of the Relationship between Psychology and Literature that will explain the study of the type and the application of psychological conditions applied in literary work. Here it is represented in Sophie and Natasha’s searching for self- identity.

1. Internal Factors that Influence Sophie and Natasha’s Searching for Their Self-Identity

To analyze the internal factors, Psychoanalytic Theory and Psychodynamic Theories are used. These theories see one’s personality from the inside of the person, on how a person see his or herself from his or her view or thought of self. According to Mischel in his book about personality 33 the interaction of emotional and motivational forces may give influences upon human’s behavior, mental states, and states of mind. And according to Freud Cirese, 53-55 emotional and motivational forces relate to the ID, Ego, and Superego. Here the unconsciousness and consciousness of the human thoughts, motivation, desires, and feelings play important roles in his or her self-identity. In this study, those unconsciousness and consciousness are classified as the internal factors that can influence the two main characters’ searching for self-identity.
