Sophie and Natasha’s Family and Friends’ Roles

81 superego Mischel, 1976: 34. And the same problem faced by Sophie and Natasha is being unmarried in their age of thirties makes them get stress of their life. Almost thirty-two, unmarried, poor. How could this have happened to someone so golden, who had been promised so much? 40 Besides that, Sophie is used to worrying about her daily life, how she will pay all of her bills, how she satisfies herself whenever she gets tired or bored, and even how she can effort her wedding party she always dreams of since she has failed before to get a better job and to maintain her relationship with her ex boyfriend even with his fiancé. It makes Sophie desperate and lose her confidence. Sophie secretly worried about how they’d pay for her dream wedding in Betterton. Neither of them had any savings, her dad was married to a witch, her mum to a pauper and Andy’s parents, while very pukka, didn’t have a bean, having lost it all in the Lloyd’s crash. 150 The failed crushed on Andy battered her confidence still more, although she still thanked God almost daily that by now she had learned enough never to have hinted at her feelings for him. 184 “I haven’t got any money. Or a place to live if I leave Olly’s.” She really hadn’t thought this through. Perhaps she should just go back to him. 472 You can’t marry someone just because he wants you. …. The problem caused by the hidden relationship between Natasha and Andy made Sophie lose her temper. Her hearth hurt, she used to believe Natasha as her best friend, she put her life on her, but then she knows that it doesn’t mean anything at all. Suddenly she rethinks again her perception about her friendship with Natasha. “But what?” Sophie drew herself up to her not very impressive full height. “I never want to see you again,” she spat at Andy. And then to Natasha: “And you. You are dead to me.” 470 Problems also make Natasha change her life. Having affair makes her become different person that she has changed from independent and tough person into 82 dependent and weak person then she lost her control on her own life. Those can bring effect toward her personality and her self-identity. She lost her focus on her work, she rarely paid a big concern with her business anymore so that she finally got fired from her company. But then she realizes, problems lead Natasha to learn how to be a good person, how to place herself within the society, how to share her life with others, and how to rebuilt her life. It can be known from the following quotations: In the next few weeks she watched herself morph from an ostensibly confident, glamorous young woman into a needy, paranoid obsessive. 183 She knew Alastair liked her because she was so independent and busy, but to make their relationship work she had to be utterly dependent on him and his plans, which meant sacrificing her own social life. 255 Natasha Green, who was so in control of her life. She remembered the conversation with Lainey and Sophie that night after Lainey was back from honeymoon. “Women don’t get pregnant unless they really want to. There’s no excuse for an unpanned pregnancy.” She felt such a fool. 337 “Of course not. I’ve been working for Barney for nearly nine years now. And this is how he rewarded me.” She thought back to the scene. Barney, not even looking embarrassed, explaining that cuts were being made, the drama department needed freshening up, so with great regret he was going to have to let her go. On a fantastic pay-off, of course. And of course they’d tell the world that she’d resigned. And no hard feelings, he had the fondest regard for her, blah, blah, blah. 461 Those factors mentioned above including internal and external factors are connected each other. External factors may bring effects toward internal factors had by Sophie and Natasha. For examples, the environment and the society may give influence on Sophie and Natasha desires and motivation, then the family and friends’ roles and also the problems may influence what Sophie and Natasha felt and thinking about her life and her view of life that can bring them toward their self-identity. 83 Overall, it has stated before that the novel tells about friends envy between Sophie and Natasha. And considering the title of the novel If I were You itself, it can be assumed that the author wants to emphasize one’s desire of being others. Trough the story, it can be known that Sophie and Natasha thought that being each other will make them get their satisfactory. Sophie thought that if she were Natasha she would have the greatest life she has dreamt of that she would have successful career and would be more respected by others. Meanwhile, Natasha thought that she would have a perfect life that she would have someone who loved her if she were Sophie who is an attractive woman and adored by many men. But finally they realize that their own life and what they have got are not totally getting worse. From the problems they have experienced, they change their paradigm that it is better to be their own selves. And their friendship help them find their truly identity. 84

A. Conclusion

After analyzing the novel as mentioned in the previous chapter, there are some findings drawn from the analysis. The findings are directed to answer the two main problems discussed in this study; those findings are: First, Sophie is described as an ambitious, dreamer, attentive, compassionate, and attractive person. On the other hand, Natasha is described as follows: independent, attentive, workaholic, lonely, introvert and dishonest. Second, it is analyzed from the novel that there are factors that influence Sophie and Natasha’s decision in finding their self-identity within their life. The factors are generally classified as the internal factors which come from their thoughts, emotions or feelings, and desires, and as the external factors coming from their outside such as their family, friendship, problems they face, and society or their environment.
