Evaluating the Designed Materials

Generally, the designed materials are suitable and relevant for the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Yogyakarta. 3 3.33 Note: N = Number of respondents Based on the result of evaluation survey, the total mean of the designed materials was 3.49 out of 4. It meant that the designed materials were well designed and acceptable for teaching reading and writing using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition CIRC for the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Yogyakarta. However, the designed materials still needed revisions based on the respondents’ comments, suggestions and feedback. The writer also asked the respondents to give comments and suggestions on the designed materials. There were four questions to gain respondents’ comments and suggestions. The first question was about the strengths and weaknesses of the designed materials. The second question asked about the parts of the designed materials that need revising and improvements. The next question was about the suggestions to improve the whole designed materials. The last question asked the respondents’ comments about the overall designed materials. From the three respondents, the writer gained five points of feedback and comments. They were: a. The overall designed materials were well designed and acceptable. The overall concept and format of the materials can support the objectives. b. The pictures are interesting. They can motivate the students. The pictures are also supported by the appropriate colors not too many colors. However, the pictures of Unit 5 in “Let’s Think First” were inappropriate since they were scary and too extreme. The writer should choose the neutral ones. Moreover, there were no sources of pictures mentioned in all units. The writer then should include the sources for each picture. c. The choice of the reading texts is good. The narratives that were used as models are good and interesting for the students. d. Some instructions were too long and unclear. It made students feel difficult to understand the tasks. The instructions in each activity should be short and clear. e. The reading It’s Time to Read and writing parts Write Your Story need more consideration. The writer should modify it again.

7. Revising the Designed Materials

After conducting the evaluation survey on the designed materials, the writer revised the designed materials based on the suggestions, criticisms, and corrections from the respondents in the evaluation step. The writer considered the suggestions and comments. The revisions are as follows: a. The writer changed the picture in Unit 5 which was too extreme or inappropriate. The writer also included the sources of all pictures. b. The writer changed or revised some instructions that were too long and complicated. c. The writer revised and improved the reading part It’s Time to Read and the writing part Write Your Story

B. The Presentation of the Designed Materials

The writer presented the designed materials for the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Yogyakarta in order to answer the second question in the problem formulation. The final version of the designed materials was presented after making some revisions and improvements based on the evaluation survey. The final version of the designed materials consisted of eight units. Each unit could be applied for 2 x 45 minutes. Table 4.5 shows the order of topics and titles in the final version of the designed materials.
