their prior knowledge. She also always teaches grammar found in the reading text. 3 The students’ difficulty in reading is due to their limited vocabulary. Grammar is another problem since it is difficult for the students to understand the sentences. 4 In teaching writing, Bu Indarwati sometimes asks the students to complete the reading text with their ideas. She also uses pictures to ask the students to write something based on the pictures. 5 The students’ difficulties in writing are due to the grammar and vocabulary. Actually, they like writing, but when the time to write comes, it is difficult for them to write or arrange the correct sentences. 6 Teaching integrated reading and writing needs a lot of time. It needs between three and four-period learning hours. Therefore, Bu Indarwati likes to give writing as their assignment, so the students can spend more time writing at home. They can write something related to the reading text, for example writing a summary or their opinions about the text. The students can also write their experience. Moreover, Bu Indarwati said that teaching integrated reading and writing depends on the situation of the students. Hence, the teaching materials should be interesting. 7 Narrative text is easier for students than the other types of text. It is because narrative is interesting and easy to understand. The students are able to write the summary of the narrative text and their favourite kind of narrative is short story. 8 Learning in groups can disturb other classes because it is noisy. However, the result of learning in groups is better than learning individually. The student can PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI learn from others, but actually only some students who are active in learning. Based on Bu Indarwati’s experience, she likes to classify the groups based on the seat. It takes time to classify based on the intelligence. The second interview was conducted on February 1 st , 2008 with Pak Rudatan as the English teacher for social stream. The result of that interview can be seen as follows. 1 Teaching reading and writing for the eleventh grade students is not really difficult. It depends on the situation since the most important thing is the students’ attention. 2 The students’ difficulty in learning reading is vocabulary. It depends on their previous school their background knowledge. It means if in their previous school they got good English instruction, of course their English and vocabulary is good, and the opposite is true also. 3 In teaching reading, Pak Rudatan likes to cut the reading text into small parts. This is because the students are lazy to read if they see long texts. The students are asked to read the text without asking the difficult words. After reading, they can ask their friends about the difficult words or share it in class. 4 In teaching writing, the students usually make one or two paragraphs. Generally, their writing skill is good. 5 Teaching integrated reading and writing is not really difficult if the students have mastered reading. The students can write well if they can read well. 6 In general, the students are able to comprehend a narrative text story. Their vocabulary is good, but their ability in grammar is bad. 7 The students are accustomed to learning in groups. It is easier than teaching the students as a whole class. Pak Rudatan often asks the clever students to form groups. Each of them finds out the members of their groups. Then they help their friends to learn together in their group. Through learning in groups, the students’ achievement appears better. But the weakness is the class becomes noisy and there are some students who walk around the class and make noise. It is the teacher’s role to control the class. 8 According to Pak Rudatan, narrative is interesting for the students, but sometimes it is more difficult than the others since there is no space for students to understand the text. From the result of the interviews, the writer concluded that learning writing is more difficult than learning reading, as Bu Indarwati said. Moreover, Pak Rudatan agreed that “the students can write well if they can read well”. The writer also found that the students’ difficulties in reading and writing are about grammar and vocabulary. Therefore, in teaching reading, Bu Indarwati always teaches grammar found in the text. Talking about learning style, learning in groups has benefits for the learners.
