They gave the answers by crossing the options given according to their learning experiences and their opinions. After obtaining the data from the questionnaire, the writer analyzed it. The data were calculated by using percentage method. Generally, the respondents have learned English for 5 to 11 years, in accordance with question number one. Moreover, most students have learned English for 8 – 9 years that was showed by the highest percentage: 48.58. The questions for number two and three were related to the students’ motivation in learning English. In the second question, the students were asked “Have you ever joined any English courses outside the school?” Although the percentage of the students who answered “yes” and “no” did not have significant number, the percentage of the students who answered “yes” was higher than the other option which was 54.29. It meant that they had motivation in learning English by joining English courses outside the school. Moreover, question number three explained more about the students’ motivation because they were asked “In your opinion, how important is learning English for your future?” Forty five students 77.14 answered “very important” and only sixteen students 22.86 answered “important”. Nobody chose “less nor not important”. It showed that they really realized the importance of learning English for their future. The writer concluded that they had good motivation in learning English. Question number four asked the students’ interest in reading. It was “Do you like reading English texts outside the school assignments?” Fifty one students 72.86 answered “Yes” and the rest which was nineteen students 27.14 said “No”. It showed that most of the students were interested in reading English texts. While question number five asked about the kind of reading texts in general that the students like. It was “What kind of reading text do you like? Most of them, which was thirty students 42.86, answered “novels”. Twenty four students 34.28 chose short stories as the reading text they like, while twenty three students 32.86 said that they liked to read articles or newspapers. There were also many students who liked reading fairy tales, which were twenty one 30 student. The rest of them said they liked to read letters nine students 12.86, comics seven students 10, and magazines 1 student 1.43. The writer gained information about the students’ reading skill through question number six. The students were asked “How is the reading skill you have?” Most of them fifty five students 78.57 said that their reading skill was not really good. Eleven students 15.71 said that their reading skill was good. One student 1.43 answered “very good” and the rest three students 4.29 answered “bad”. The students’ difficulties in reading were known through question number seven. Forty nine students 70 said that their difficulty in reading was about the difficult words vocabulary. Forty two students 60 said that it was difficult to understand the grammar, while the rest ten students 14.28 said that the passages were too long. Based on that, the writer concluded that the main difficulties in reading were about vocabulary and grammar. In question number eight, the students were to choose reading activity they like. Twenty eight students 40 chose “reading the text and answering questions” and “discussing the text in groups”. Sixteen students 22.86 chose retelling the text orally and thirteen students 18.57 chose retelling the text by writing a summary. Three students 4.29 chose “just reading and understanding the text”. The rest chose “reading and writing a story” 1 student 1.43, “translating the text” 1 student 1.43, and “having no idea” 1 student 1.43. In question number nine, the students were asked whether the reading activities given in second grade really helped them to understand the reading text. Most of the students, which were fifty two students 74.29, chose “Yes”, and the rest 25.71 said “No”. The next question number ten was “Do you like reading narrative text?” Fifty seven students 81.43 said “Yes” and thirteen students 18.57 said “No”. The students were asked about the kind of narrative text they liked through the eleventh question. Among the five choices given, most of them 47 students 67.14 chose short stories as they favorite narrative text. Nineteen students 27.14 chose fairy tales, 17 students 24.29 chose legends and fables. The rest of them 15 students 21.43 chose myths as their favourite narrative text. Related to question number ten, the students were asked whether their teacher had ever often given narrative text in the class in question number twelve. Sixty four students 91.43 said “Yes” and six students said “No”. It meant that the students had already been familiar with narrative text. In order to know the students’ interest in writing, they were asked whether they liked to write something in English in question number thirteen. From that question, forty seven students 67.14 answered “Yes” and twenty three students 32.86 answered “No”. It meant that most of them were interested in writing in English. Then, the next question asked about the students’ experience in writing summary of a story in English. That question asked whether they had experienced it or not. Fifty three students 75.71 said “Yes” and the rest; seventeen students 24.29 said “No”. It showed that most of them had experience in writing summary of a story in English. The next question tried to gain information about students’ ability in writing. The result was that fifty students 71.43 said that their writing ability was not really good and three students 4.28 said it was bad. However, fifteen students 21.43 said that their writing ability was good, even two students 2.86 were confident enough to say that their writing ability was excellent. Related to the answer for the fifteenth question which told that most of the students thought their writing ability was not really good, the next question asked the reason for that. It asked the students’ opinion “What are your difficulties in writing?” and the result was that fifty two students 74.29 said they had difficulty in grammar, while forty six students 65.71 said the difficulty they faced was lack of vocabulary. Moreover, one student 1.43 said he had difficulty in spelling. Since this research used cooperative learning, the students were also asked about learning in groups through question number seventeen to twenty. Question number seventeen asked whether they had learned English in groups. Fifty four students 77.14 answered “Yes” and the rest 22.86 answered “No”. Forty six of them 65.71 chose 4-5 people in a group, twenty one students 30 chose 2-3 people, and three students 4.29 chose 5-6 people in a group. In the next question, the writer asked about the students’ opinion about whether learning in groups could be useful for them in learning English. The result was that sixty seven students 95.71 said “Yes” and only three students 4.29 said “No”. In addition, for the last question, the students were asked about their opinion of learning in groups. Fifty five students 78.57 said that they liked learning in groups since it could enable them to understand and do the task faster. Twelve students 17.14 said that they liked learning in groups because they could relax and four students 5.71 said they didn’t like learning in groups since it could make the class noisy and disturbed their concentration in studying. From those questions, the writer concluded most of the students realized that learning in groups was useful for them since it could help them better in learning English.

2. Stating Goals, Topics, and General Purposes

In this study, the writer adapted 2006 Curriculum KTSP. The goals that were stated as Competence Standard were modified by the writer since the designed materials emphasized only two skills; reading and writing. Although the designed materials emphasized reading and writing skills, the materials also helped the students to learn speaking and listening through group discussion or group work. Having determined the goals, the writer stated the topics and the general purposes that were stated as Basic Competence. The basic competence PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI was related to all topics. The topics and the basic competence were presented in Table 4.2.
