Romeo and Juliet Many years ago, in the late 1500s, two powerful families the Montagues and the Capulets had been feuding with each other for years in Verona, Italy. Old Capulet, Juliets father, threw a party to which he invited all his friends. The Montagues were not invited of course, but Romeo devised a plan to get a look at Rosaline; a young girl he had been pursing. He disguised himself and slipped into the party. Once inside, his attention was stolen; not by Rosaline, but by Juliet. Romeo fell instantly in love, but was disappointed when he found out that Juliet was a Capulet. Juliet noticed Romeo too, but she was unaware that he was a member of the hated Montagues. Later, after discovering that the young man who caught her eye was a member of the enemy family, Juliet went out onto her balcony to tell the stars about her strong but forbidden love. At the same time, Romeo was lurking in the bushes below. He overheard Juliet confess her love for him to the heavens. No longer able to control his powerful feelings, Romeo revealed himself to her and admitted that he felt the same. The very next day, with the help of Romeos friend Friar Lawrence, Romeo and Juliet were secretly married. On the day of the wedding, two of Romeos friends, Benvolio and Mercutio, were walking through the streets of Verona when they were confronted by Juliets cousin, Tybalt. Tybalt was out to get [Romance] | Reading and Writing Narrative 32 Romeo for crashing the Capulets party so he startet a fight with his friends. Romeo showed up, but did not want to fight Tybalt because he no longer held a grudge against Juliets family. Romeos friends couldn’t understand why he wouldn’t stand up for himself so Mercutio stepped in to do it for him. A swordfight with Tybalt followed. Mercutio was killed. To avenge the death of his friend, Romeo killed Tybalt, an act that would award him even more hatred from the Capulet family. The Prince of Verona banished Romeo and he was forced to leave Juliet, who was devastated by the loss of her love. Juliets father, not knowing of his daughters marriage, decided to marry her to another young man named Paris. In despair, Juliet consulted with Friar Laurence. He advised her to agree to the marriage, but on the morning of the wedding, she would drink a potion that he prepared for her. The potion would make it look like Juliet was dead and she would be put into the Capulet burial vault. Then, the Friar would send Romeo to rescue her. She did as the Friar said and was put into the vault by her heartbroken parents. Bad news travels fast. Before the Friar could tell Romeo of the hoax, Romeo heard from someone else that his beloved Juliet was dead. Overcame with grief, Romeo bought a poison and went to Juliets tomb to die beside his wife. At the door of the tomb, Romeo was forced to fight Paris, whom he swiftly killed. Nothing would stop him from joining his love. Inside the vault, Romeo drank the poison and took his last breath next to his sleeping wife. Moments later, Juliet awakened to see her husbands dead body. She learned what had happened from Friar Laurence who had just arrived. With no reason left to live, Juliet killed herself with Romeos dagger. The tragedy had a tremendous impact on both the Montagues and the Capulets. The families were hurt so much by the death of their children that they agreed to never fight again.
