Description of the Participants

To conduct the post-design survey the writer distributed questionnaires to 1 English lecturer, 4 elementary English teachers, and 3 English for children instructors. All participants are in Yogyakarta.

a. Description of the Participants

The participants of the post-design survey consisted of 8 people. They were 1 English lecturer, 4 elementary English teachers, and 3 English for children instructors. All participants are in Yogyakarta. Data Presentation The writer obtained the data from questionnaires, there were two steps of data, and they were taken from the post-design survey. The first step was the presentation of descriptive statistics and the second type was the list of the participants’ suggestions, opinions, and criticisms. 1 Descriptive Statistics The data was obtained from the participants by using closed questionnaires. The assessment of the participants’ opinions on the designed materials used five points of agreement. 1 = if the participant strongly disagreed with the statement 2 = if the participant disagreed with the statement 3 = if the participant was undecided 4 = if the participant agreed with the statement 5 = if the participant strongly agreed with the statement The results of the evaluation were arranged in the form of a table as follows: Central Tendency No Participants’ Opinion on N Mn 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 The basic competencies and the indicators are well formulated. The learning experiences are able to support the achievements of the learning indicators. The discussions of each unit are relevant to the topic. The materials are interesting and already match with the learning indicators. The short stories are interesting and suitable to support the learning indicators. The materials enable the students to improve their skills and help them to promote their values of life. The exercises are well elaborated and facilitate the students to promote their values of life. The topic and the activities are well developed. Generally, the materials are varied. In general, the materials are well elaborated. 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 4 4 4 3, 85 4, 4 4 3, 6 4 3, 85 3, 88 Grand Mean 3, 95 Table 4.9: Descriptive Statistics of Participants’ Opinion 1 Participants’ Suggestions Opinions, Comments, and criticisms on the Designed Materials The writer also obtained feedback from the respondents in the form of suggestions, opinions, and criticisms which were useful for revision and improvement of the designed materials. The participants’ opinions were taken from the distributed open-ended questionnaires. In the questionnaire, the participants were given some spaces to write comments and suggestions about the designed materials. It was considered as input to improve and to make the final revision of the instructional materials. The results of the questionnaires are summarized as follows: First, the suggestion concerns with the language including words and sentences choice, the participants suggested simplifying the language of the stories. Three participants suggested the writer to minimize the difficult words of the stories. The words and the sentences used in the materials should be appropriate with the students’ ability. Second suggestion is about the grammar. Six participants suggested checking any misspelling or incorrect written construction in the designed materials. The grammar used in the materials should be correct because it can influence the teaching goals and activities. Third, some participants suggested about the layout of the materials. Two participants suggested that the writer give more answer space for the exercises. One participant suggested that the writer minimize the use of colorful fonts in the materials. One participant suggested the improvement of the picture of the stories given.

B. DISCUSSION

This part presented the result of the materials evaluation and the process of revising the designed materials. The writer used the participants’ opinions and suggestions in the post-design survey for making revisions and improvements on the designed materials. Based on the descriptive statistics result of the participants’ opinion on the designed materials, the writer found that the grand mean was 3, 95. The result showed that the designed materials were appropriate for the sixth grade of elementary school students. Based on the recommendations and suggestions above, the writer conducted some revision and improvement on the designed materials based on the evaluation of the participants, so that the writer developed the better instructional materials. The revisions and improvements were written as follows: 1. Language As recommended by the participants, the writer changed the difficult diction into simple diction to avoid misunderstanding task and instruction, and to help the student to understand the lesson. 2. Grammar The writer corrected any misspelling and inappropriate sentences to avoid giving bad example to the students. 3. Lay out To improve the lay out of the materials the writer minimized the color fonts, gave more answer space, and added the appropriate picture of the story to help the students understand the story given.
