CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
This chapter presents the results of the previous chapter. This chapter is divided into two parts. The first part concerns with the conclusions of the study, the
second part concerns with the suggestions.
A. Conclusions
This study was aimed to design a set of supplementary English instructional materials using short stories to promote the students’ values of life for the sixth
grade of elementary school students. There were two problems stated in this study formulated in the form of questions as stated in problems formulation.
3. How is a set of supplementary English instructional materials using short
stories to promote the students’ values of life for the sixth grade of elementary school students designed?
4. What does a set of supplementary English instructional materials using short
stories to promote the students’ values of life for the sixth grade of elementary school students look like?
In order to answer the first question on problem formulation, the writer conducted the pre-design and post-design survey. The steps of the two surveys are
adapted from the educational research and development RD and the writer formulated a model which was a combination of Kemp’s, Borich’s and Dick and
Carey’s instructional model. Kemp’s model was chosen because it was flexible. The writer could start from any step of the model. Moreover, Kemp gives a clear
description about the given step in simpler terminology. Borich’s model was chosen because Borich gave determining values as the important part to develop a design.
This step supports the goals of this study. Moreover, Borich concluded all the need surveys in one step. Dick and Carey’s model was chosen because it gives designing
materials as the important step. A set of supplementary English instructional materials using short stories to
promote the students’ values of life for the sixth grade of elementary school students was modified through seven steps as the framework which is adapted from
Kemp’s, Borich’s and Dick and Carey’s instructional design models. The seven steps used in developing the materials were:
1 Gaining knowledge of some inputs Borich.
2 Determining goals, topics and general purposes Kemp.
3 Recognizing values assumption Borich
4 Listing subject content Kemp.
5 Selecting teaching and learning activities Kemp.
6 Designing the learning materials Dick and Carey
7 Evaluating and revising the materials Kemp.
To answer the second question, the writer presented the designed materials in general, the designed materials consist of 8 units. They were as follows:
1 Hi, it’s Me
2 My beautiful Home
3 We are friends
4 Let’s Do Your Very Best
5 The true happiness
6 Do you ever feel this?
7 Naughty or not
8 Are you a hero?
Each topic consisted of six sections, namely 1 Think first, 2 Story time, 3 Our English today, 4 How about you, 5 What do I think then, and 6 Let’s
have fun. Think first gives the introduction for the students about the topic and the values they are going to learn. The introduction is on the question form. Story time,
this section consists of reading activities. The activities may be different for each unit that would help the students in comprehending the topic and make the students
enjoy their reading activity. Our English today focused on developing the student’s English ability. This section explains about the vocabulary, structure and language
expression related to the topic. ‘How about you’ section gives the activities which are considered to help the students compare or have social interaction with their
friend by sharing or discussing the topic given and the value being touched. What do I think then, in this section the students will answer some questions by
themselves. This section is aimed to help the students explore their own values discussed in each unit. Let’s have fun, in this section the students are expected to
practice the fun activities such as games, sing a song, read poem, etc. the activities are designed in order to make the students relax and practice what they have learnt
today by doing fun activities. From the post-design survey study done by the writer, the result showed that
most participants had a positive view about the designed materials. It proved that the designed materials are believed to bring satisfactory results. In another words
the result concluded that the materials are good and applicable, the materials could
be used as alternative materials and answered the students’ needs in developing their English ability. The materials can help the students to promote their values of
life and can bring the students into a more relax situation in which the students can express their feelings, ideas, and opinions more freely. Moreover, the writer made
improvements based on the participants’ suggestions, criticism and corrections to have the final version of the designed materials.
B. Suggestions
