Q.1 Cartography of Populaion Vulnerability to Volcano Hazard of Mount Merapi Java, Indonesia Tujuan Peneliian : Mengkaji kerentanan penduduk di daerah Merapi terhadap bahaya aliran lahar dan piroklasic Bidang Peneliian : Vulcanology Lama Peneliian : 10 months, since July 23, 2010 Daerah Peneliian : D.I. Yogyakarta and Central Java Mount Merapi lanscape Mitra Kerja : Dr. Surono, Pusat Vulkanologi dan Miigasi Bencana Geologi – Kementerian ESDM Abstrak Tropical forests constitute the world’s most species habitats. An area of 0.5 km2 in Borneo may contain as many tree species as the 4.2 milion km2 of temperate forest zone in Europe, North America and Asia combined Wright 2002. Tropical forest, in particular those found in Indonesia, are characterized by extremely constant and warm climatic conditions over prolonged periods of time Oppo et al. 2009. In comparison to temperate regions of the planet that are characterized by seasonal changes and have known many extinctions caused by ice ages, tropical areas exhibit a high species diversity both in plants and animals Morley, 2000. Due to the extremely constant but rich conditions found in tropical rainforests and the large number of species, specialization in plants and animals is often extreme. Tropical rainforests contain many plant species producing substances of medicinal value that have proven valuable for pharmaceutical purposes. However, rainforests also show their extreme evolutionary specializations in the sensory systems of animals that inhabit the forests. These specializations include low-light vision, but also echolocation, used by bats. The working principles of bat sonar are of great interest to engineers. In the 1950s when strong advances were made in the development of radar systems, the strong similarity between the chirp signals used by bats and those used in radar systems initially raised the suspicion that bats use a processing system similar to that used in the analysis of radar echoes Strother, 1961. It has since become clear that bats lack access to some essential sources of information, such as phase, nevertheless, at close range, bats exhibit an extreme ability to find targets hidden in clutter, which currently remains unexplained. In short, from a technological perspective, the bat sonar system is interesting because it can extract remarkable detailed information on the basis of fairly simple signals from an engineering point of view. 221 Sekretariat Perizinan Penelitian Asing Kementerian Riset Dan Teknologi DIREKTORI PENELITIAN ASING DI INDONESIA 2010 Q.1.1 Mr. Adrien G.C. Yogyakarta G. Merapi di Kab. Boyolali, Magelang dan Sleman; Jaim G. Semeru di Kab. Lumajang dan Malang, G. Kelud di Kab. Blitar, Kediri; Lampung G. Anak Krakatau di Kab. Lampung Selatan Mitra Kerja : Pusat Vulkanologi dan Miigasi Bencana Geologi, Badan Geologi, Dep. ESDM Dr. Surono Abstrak The research that I am going to perform in Indonesia for my PhD thesis will be focused on the utilization of volcanic deposits around three Javanese volcanoese: Mt Merapi, Mt Kelut and Mt Sumeru an mybe in Anak Krakatau. The sands, blocks and gravels left back by pyroclastic or lahar flows are consistent support for local communities that use them as 1 construction materials for buildings or roads, and 2 as fertile sediments in sands pockets for agriculture. In this study, I shall study the spatial organization of such activities around volcanic valleys of Merapi, Kelut and Semeru. Moreover, I will see the environmental imp[acts of this activity, and its socioeconomic features. What are the main evolutions on the valley morphology? How do these activities contribute to the erosion rate? What are the implication on the deep water supply? How extraction activity is developed? Who are the main actors? What is the palce of such activities in yhe everyday life of local populations? The works and papers about this issue are rare, and only focused on one valley, or one cathcment area ; there are no general result. No comprstive studies that could give an overview about the utilization of the volcanic deposits support. It willcontibute to all studies realized on populations daily life, in order to contribute to vulnerability studies, by giving more information about the way people live around a dangerous volcano. Thus, this research is included in the European research project MIA VITA MITigate and Assess 222 Sekretariat Perizinan Penelitian Asing Kementerian Riset Dan Teknologi DIREKTORI PENELITIAN ASING DI INDONESIA 2010 risk from Volcanic Impact on Terrain and human Activities , because one of its aims is to develop a better knowledge of populations vulnerability.
