Mitra Kerja : Pusat Geodesi dan Geodinamika BAKOSURTANAL Cecep Subarya, M.Surv.sc. Abstrak The emerging Global Navigation Satellites System GPS, GLONASS and Galileo to determine coordinates in sub-centimeter requires a high precision geoid to convert the ellipsoidal height into the orthometric height for practical use. The use of GPS technology in surveys, mapping, and engineering for modern heights determination will increase tremendously due to its efficiency. Since a precise gravimetric geoid model for Indonesia has not yet been produced, consequently, height measurements using Global Navigation Satellite System GNSS techniques are not fully implemented in practice. Therefore, it is urgent to establish a good gravimetric geoid for the country. The geoid is not only to support the geospatial infrastructures development but also required in studies of sea level changes, absolute ocean circulation and the vertical datum unification. To compute such a precise gravimetric geoid a good coverage of the gravity data are needed globally and locally. The current situation of the local gravity data coverage for geoid determination in Indonesia is far from sufficient for a high precision geoid. For that reason, it is required to accelerate the completion of dataset nationwide. The Geodynamics Departement, DTU Space has developed an airborne gravity survey technique which will accelerate the regional data collection. BAKOSURTANAL in cooperation with the Geodynamics Departement, DTU Space during 2008-2009 has completed the gravity data collections for Sulawesi and part of Kalimantan and will finalized the data collection in Kalimantan and part of Papua this year. 160 Sekretariat Perizinan Penelitian Asing Kementerian Riset Dan Teknologi DIREKTORI PENELITIAN ASING DI INDONESIA 2010 The aim of the research activities is to perform a high precision geoid for the country based on gravimetric solution. The realization will be done per-island partition. L.1.1 Mr. Rene Forsberg 216 Tempat dan tgl. lahir : Kobenhavn, 05 – 09 – 1954 Warga Negara : Denmark Jabatan : Head, Geodynamic Dept. Exploring geographic trends in sea level is of critical importance because sea-level changes are not globally uniform due to isostatic deformation of the solid Earth. We propose to collect the first accurate and precise sea level data from near Borneo for the last 2000 years. In the first year covered by this proposal, we will identify appropriate sites, refine methodologies, and produce preliminary sea-level reconstructions using coral micro atolls and microfossil-based transfer functions. Djumarma Wirakusumah, Badan Survei Geologi Kementerian ESDM Abstrak Indonesian coral reefs are among the most diverse marine ecosystems in the world, yet very little is known about the long-term history of these reefs. Most available data have been collected in the first half of the twentieth century, and suggest that, geologically speaking, the onset of high diversity is a relatively young phenomenon. Timing has been correlated to large-scale tectonic processes, related to the northward movement of Australia and the restriction of the Indonesian Throughflow. The proposed research aims at improved documentation of the onset of diversification, and correlation to local, regional and global processes. We will do this by ensuring that at each localities stratigraphy, paleoenvironment and diversity of key taxa are documented by allocated teams of researches. The proposed research area has been proven to be rich in well preserved fossils and sections with dating possibilities. 163 Sekretariat Perizinan Penelitian Asing Kementerian Riset Dan Teknologi DIREKTORI PENELITIAN ASING DI INDONESIA 2010 L.3.1 Dr. Jonathan Alistair 223 Tempat dan tgl. lahir : Chichester, 03 – 07 – 1964 Warga Negara : Inggris Jabatan : Research Scienist Collecions Manager Insitusi : Dept. of Palaeontology, Natural History Museum, London Email : willem.renamancbnaturalis.nl Alamat : 38 Grosvenor Square, London W1K 2HW L.3.2 Dr. Willem Renema 224 Tempat dan tgl. lahir : Apeldoorn, 6 Januari 1972 Warga Negara : Belanda Jabatan : Curator of Micropalaeontology Insitusi : Naionaal Natuurhistorisch, The Netherlands E-mail : renemanaturalis.nl Alamat : PO.Box. 9517, 2300 RA.Leiden L.3.3 Dr. Kenneth G. Abstrak Although the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake was one of the biggest earthquakes in history, its tsunami generation mechanism is remained unresolved. Japanese marine geosciences attain to high level but do not have experience and knowledge in studies offshore of Sumatra. In the other hand, Indonesian researchers have the most abundant knowledge and experiences for the surveillance study in their home country. To complete this research, Indonesian knowledge and experience are needed. Science communities are required to pursue the past, present, and future of great earthquakes offshore of Sumatra. This research contributes it through detailed marine surveys. When the tsunami generation mechanism during the 2004 rupture is clarified by this research, we need to spread out it in the world. Especially, such an effort is thought to be the most important for the Indonesian people. Researchers of the home country Indonesia is the most appropriate to explain it plainly and continuously to the public in the home country. The public relation activities in Indonesia would be positively supported by the Japanese team throughout the bilateral frame work even after this join program ends. Towui and Matano, on the island of Sulawesi. This research builds upon our previous seismic reflection and filed surveys of these lakes that document the presence thick piles of highly stratified sediment accumulating at rates ideal for late-Plestocene paleoclimate studies. We propose torecover new sediments core from these lakes with site selection guided by our existing seismic reflection grid. Sediment core will be shipped to the US for analyses by American and Indonesian collaborators, including automated coe logging magnetic susceptibility, density, sediment color and sediment composition inorganic carbon content and mineralogy, organiccarbon, nitrogen, CN ratio, and chemistry from X-ray 170 Sekretariat Perizinan Penelitian Asing Kementerian Riset Dan Teknologi DIREKTORI PENELITIAN ASING DI INDONESIA 2010 fluorescence, as well as novel molecular isotopic tools, particularly the hydrogen isotopic composition of terrestrial leaf waxes. We also propose to conduct an air-gun seismic reflection survey of Lake Towuti in order to evaluate the total depth of sediments in this lake, the underlying basin tectonics and architecture, and the potential of this lake for continental scientific drilling. This work will provide fundamental new insights into the history of Indonesian convention and hydrology and its relationships to global climate changes, as well as new information regarding the age, origin, and past changes in the Malili Lakes, a unique and fragile lake ecosystem. Most coincide with subduction zones, which run for thousands of kilometers along the country’s Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean sides and curl into the archipelago as well. No other nation has lost more lives to tsunamis in the last 200 years. Even without the 2004 Indian Ocean and 1883 Krakatau tsunamis, Indonesia’s tsunami losses in recent centuries surpass even thos of Japan. The main way to reduce losses from future Indonesian tsunamis is to provide coastal communities with evacuation guidance tailored to local tsunami potential. As happened in Aceh in 2004, most tsunamis in Indonesia start coming ashore within a few tens of 173 Sekretariat Perizinan Penelitian Asing Kementerian Riset Dan Teknologi DIREKTORI PENELITIAN ASING DI INDONESIA 2010 minutes. Deep-sea tsunami detectors, though needed to confirm that an Indonesian tsunami is headed for Thailand or India, offer less for Indonesia itself. Tsunami survival in Indonesia depends more on evacuating in the minutes after an earthquake at the tsunami’s source. To help guide such evacuations, however, Indonesian tsunami scientists face the daunting task of estimating the tsunami potential of each of the archipelago’s tsunami sources. Indonesian historical records, fragmental before the 19th-century spread of Dutch authority, are unlikely to express the full range of tsunami sizes or to show how often and how regularly the tsunamis recur. The 2004 tsunami, for example, accompanied a magnitude-9.2 earthquake that suddenly expended centuries’s worth of stored up tectonic-plate motion along 1500 km of the Sunda subduction zone. Written records of earthquakes on this tsunami source, however, span less than 200 years and include no earthquake larger than magnitude 7.9. Since the 2004 tsunami I have devoted most of my work to assisting scientists from Indian Ocean countries in further applications of tsunami geology. The main goal of the proposed work is to help build and sustain a community of Indonesian tsunami geologists. I also hope to bring learn Indonesian lessons that will help me promote tsunami safety in other countries. L.7.1 Dr. Brian Franklin Atwater 258 Tempat dan Tgl. The fosil record of Cenozoic reef ecosystem contains abundant examples of the effects of past global and regional environmental changes. Analysis of the faunal change at some key moments will provide understanding of reef ecosystem functioning during times of accelerated environmental change. The Early Miocene is a key period in the development of the present day centre of maximum marine diversity in Indonesia Renema et al 2008. Many groups of large benthic foraminifera have their first occurrence, and several typical Oligence genera go extinct. Detailed understanding of the faunal succession and environmental change in this period will increase our insight in why and when the Indonesian biodiversity hotspot developed. The EU-funded ITN research program `Throughflow` focuses at this time period, and aims at establishing a greater understanding of key processes in the biotic response of coral reefs to long-term environmental changes resulting from closure of the Indonesian Throughflow during the Oligence-Miocene transition ~25 Million years ago. Key elements are detailed sampling of key areas, establishing a detailed sampling stratigraphic framework, as well as detailed biodiversity assessments. During mapping of the Samarinda-Sangkulirang area in the first part of the 20th century e.g. Felix 1921; Gerth, 1923; Rutten 1910 etc numerous well preserved corals, mollusks and other fossils were collected in the region, from numerous localities. The mollusks and foraminifera from this region represent a variety of depositional settings, ranging from mangrove dominated to fully marine. The presence of such a wide variety of environmental settings and accompanying fauna in Oligence to Miocene deposits should add to our knowledge of the timing and development of the current high diversity in the IWP. The proposed ieldwork aims at: 1. Locaing fossil bearing secions and outcrops that allow the study of biodiversity and paleoenvironment around the Oligocene-Miocene transiion 2. Relocaing fossil bearing localiies in the Sangkulirang area 3. Abstrak The Earth Observatory of Singapore EOS, LIPI, and colleagues are involved in a number of ongoing scientific and geological hazards-related research projects in Sumatra that require regular, repeated visits to various locations in and near Sumatra. In addition to scheduled visits that are sometimes a few months apart or less , there is a need to respond quickly following large earthquakes, such as the Banyak Island earthquake of 6 April 2010 : after any large earthquake, it is highly desirable that scientists, such as ourselves, visit the region affected very soon after the event, because a observable markers that provide crucial information degrade rapidly with time, and b we wish to make a forecast for future earthquake hazards as soon as possible after any large earthquake. 176 Sekretariat Perizinan Penelitian Asing Kementerian Riset Dan Teknologi DIREKTORI PENELITIAN ASING DI INDONESIA 2010 For these reasons, we wish to secure year-long annually renewable multiple-entry research visas for each EOS scientist who will be making frequent trips to the field or who is likely to be needed in the field following such an event. If these visas can be acquired in advance, then all EOS personnel who might be involved in such work can deploy into affected areas within hours to days following a natural disaster, instead of waiting weeks to months for a research visa to be procured, as is now necessary. In that way, we can avoid delays that can significantly hamper our efforts to understand what has happened and that can limit our ability to forecast what may occur in the future. In addition, it will ease the burden on both the EOS scientists and our LIPI sponsors, for those EOS scientists who need to make frequent trips to the field. In this proposal, we summarize projects that are anticipated in the coming year. Following the proposal, we attach, as appendices supporting material, complete proposals for each project. Large sections of the Sunda megathrust have failed progressively over the past decade in an extraordinary earthquake sequence. One question of great humanitarian and scientific importance is how the remaining un-ruptured and under-ruptured patches might fail in coming decades. We use annually banded coral microatolls, which preserve precise information about past relative sea levels, to deduce tectonic histories centuries into the past. We propose to continue work above the 2004, 2005, and 2007 rupture patches-from Simeulue to the Mentawai Islands-to resolve lingering questions and write up results supporting the particularly high hazards we infer for the near future. We will also be conducting a trip for the purpose of investigating the effects of the April 2010 Banyak Island earthquake. Ranau Mitra Kerja : Pusat Peneliian Geoteknologi LIPI Dr. Rer nat Sri Yudawai Cahyani Abstrak Being situated within the Western Tropical Pasific, a key region of the global climate system IPCC 2007 the Indonesian archipelago provides an excellent opportunity to gain a better understanding of processes controlling natural climatic variability using highly- resolved terrestrial archives. Primary processes controlling Indonesian climate on seasonal to interannual scales with global significance include the migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone ITCZ, the Interaction of the tropical Indopacific with the large Asian and Australian Monsoons, and large scale ocean-atmosphere processes such as the El Nino Southern Oscillation ENSO and the Indian Ocean Dipole IOD. The sensitivity of the Indonesian environment to these various climatic subsystems makes Indonesia invaluable for paleoclimatic and paleoenviromental reconstructions on interannual to geologic timescales. Furthermore it makes Indonesia a promising target for understanding climatic- environmental changes, in particular, for studying the interplay between components in the climate-environment system, such as land ocean linkage, ENSO-IOD coupling, and others. Apart from its important climatic features Indonesia is furthermore a hotspot of neotectonic and associated volcanic activity with extensive impact on socio-economic structures. To date relatively little is know about the frequency and magnitude of volcanic events and earthquake activity in the past. Therefore investigations aiming at a better understanding of the frequency and magnitude of these often severe events in the past can help to provide a base for future predictions and mitigation strategies. 178 Sekretariat Perizinan Penelitian Asing Kementerian Riset Dan Teknologi DIREKTORI PENELITIAN ASING DI INDONESIA 2010 L.10.1 Dr. Henrik Vogel, M.Sc. 263 Tempat dan tgl. lahir : Braunschweig, 10 – 06 – 1979 Warga Negara : Jerman Jabatan : Post Doctoral Researcher Insitusi : Insitute of Geology and Mineralogy, University of Cologne, Germany Email : vogelhuni-koein.de Alamat : Zulpicher Str. 49 a, D-50674 Cologne Germany L.10.2 Mr. Alexander Francke 264 Tempat dan tgl. lahir : Duisburg, 13 – 01 – 1984 Warga Negara : Jerman Jabatan : Master Student Insitusi : Insitute of Geology and Mineralogy, University of Cologne, Germany Email : vogelhuni-koein.de Alamat : Zulpicher Str. 49 a, D-50674 Cologne Germany L.11 Reconstrucing PaleoclimaicPaleoenvironmental Evoluion, Volcanic Ash Dispersal, and Earthquake Acivity in the Western Tropical Paciic Using Terrestrial and Marine Records from Indonesia” Tujuan Peneliian : Menganalisis sampel sedimen permukaan dan sedimen ini pada masing-masing straigrai, kronologi, sedimentologi dan geokinia guna memperoleh pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang perubahan iklim dan lingkungan jangka pendek dan jangka panjang dan akiitas gempa bumi Bidang Peneliian : Geologi Lama Peneliian : 03 iga bulan, mulai 30 Juni 2010 Daerah Peneliian : Sultra Danau Matano dan Danau Towui di Sorowako; Sumut D. The proposed research for 2010 is a field investigation on Quaternary Geology and Paleoenvironment of the Ngandong site and surrounding areas, Central and East Java, the location from which fourteen Homo erectus fossils were excavated from 1931-1933 by the Geological Survey of the Netherlands Indies Table 1 The human-fossil assemblage decades ago became a key reference collection in human evolution sciences, the depositional history and geological age of the fossil-bearing deposits continue to be shrouded in controversy. Over the course of the last several years, our Indonesia-U.S team has discovered previously unavailable maps, photographs and reports done by the Survey geologists. These new archival materials clearly define the location and stratigraphy of the site. The 2010 fieldwork will focus on quaternary geology, sedimentology and stragtigraphical studies of the discovery beds. The result of this work will prepare the way for refining the geological age, assessing the origin and paleoenvironment of the Ngandong Homo Erectus. L.12.1 Prof. Dr. Russell L. Specifically targeting Pre-Carboniferous rocks of the Pinoh Metamorphic Group which outcrop on the northern margin of the Schwaner batholiths. Detailed field study will be completed to assess the nature and contact of metamorphic basement rocks. These will then be dated in order to determine the sequence of deformation. Granitoid rocks of the region will also be sampled and highly resistant minerals subjected to chemical analyses which may lead to better understanding of the age and origin of the basement fragment. Modern river sediments will also be sampled from the region in order to characterize heavy mineral assemblages draining from the source lithologies. The characterization of this metamorphic core and the Schwaner Mountain lithologies will provide invaluable data for tectonic reconstructions as well as sediment provenance studies in the region. Fieldwork will be undertaken with the collaboration of the Institute Teknologi Bandung ITB Indonesia. A counterpart from the ITB will accompany me on the fieldwork. The field targets include the region to the northern extent of the Schwaner Mountains, south of the Malawi basin. Pinoh Metamorphic Group rocks are described in a longitudinally confined region running E-W 00.60o S to 01.60o S from 110. 00o E to 114. 00o E. Outcrops will be sought along river traverses running south from the Malawi River into the Schwaner. Detailed observations of field relationships will be taken in order to sample fresh outcrop of basement rocks that have been little affected by subsequent contact metamorphism. River sediments will be collected throughout the area visited for provenance analysis as well as samples of granitoid bodies. 183 Sekretariat Perizinan Penelitian Asing Kementerian Riset Dan Teknologi DIREKTORI PENELITIAN ASING DI INDONESIA 2010 L.13.1 Mr. Duncan Andrew Wits 272 Tempat dan tgl. lahir : Maidenhead, 04 – 03 – 1974 Warga Negara : Inggris Jabatan : Post Graduate Researcher Insitusi : Earth Science Dept.
