Internal Intertextuality and Socio-Background

Similar topic about dependency on supernatural being is present from a story from the surrounding of the folktales. The story is entitled People who Descented Anderson, 1999: 116- 127. The story is written in three languages, namely Padoe, English, and Indonesian. The story is about the experience of the people of a society in going up to the sky and down to the earth. The people from the sky are powerful. They sets rules for human on the earth. Once upon a time, people on earth makes the person from the sky disappointed. Consequently, the people on earth might not get helped by the people from the sky. This story depicts the same topic that human is dependent on supernatural helps. Without the supernatural helps, humans are powerless and need to struggle. The analysis on both macrostructure and microstructure of the folktales answers this thesis research problems. From the macrostructure analysis, the prominent ideologies of the folktales, i.e. about the society’s submissiveness to customs and the society members’ dependency on supernatural beings, are revealed. The microstructure analysis provides the detailed and rigorous linguistic proofs of the existence of the ideologies. The ideologies are tendenciously present given that the discourse and social practices in society also recognize them 220

CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter contains the conclusions and the recommendations derived from the analysis in chapter IV. The conclusions are based on each analysis included in the macrostructure and microstructure analysis. The recommendations presents the further possible development of the analyses in terms of the methodology and the data. The recommendations also cover practical suggestions for both academics and practitioners.

5.1. Conclusions

After conducting the analysis, the first thesis problem is solved by the revelation of the ideologies as the macrostructure analysis suggests. The macrostructure analysis is done by employing the plot analysis and analysis of the topics. The ideologies are that the society is submissive to the customs and that the members of the society are dependent to the supernatural beings in the folktales. The second problem is solved by the result of the microstructure analysis. The ideologies are proven prominent by the configuration of the transitivity, modality, and atitudinal analysis of the folktales. As the answer of the first problem, this thesis works on revealing two main ideologies employed in the folktales namely the submissiveness to customs and the dependency on supernatural beings. The society members are submissive to the existing customs. They might receive social sanctions if they disobey the customs. The customs are set by collectively the members. The individuals are expected to completely obey the customs. The society makes use of supernatural stories in maintaining the customs. Similarly, those who either obey or disobey the rules set by the supernatural beings might receive concequences. The consequences are in the forms of blessing and curse. In revealing the ideologies, macrostructure analyses reveal the two ideologies and three main discourse topics. The microstructure analyses reveal the supporting linguistic details for the topics. The microstructure analyses are the extensions of the macrostructure analysis. The macrostructure analyses consist of two analyses to find out the general meanings of the folktales, or the ideologies. The first is the analysis on the plots of the folktales. The plot analysis reveals the ideologies in relations to the causal relationships of the narrative events in the folktales. The second analysis is the topic analysis. From the topic analysis the most prominent discourse topics are revealed. The analysis of the plots reveals the ideologies by highlighting the moral teachings and the fates of the characters. In highlighting the moral teachings and the fates, plot analysis separates two oppositions groups. The first opposition group divides human beings as the members of societies and the societies as collective institution. The second opposition group divides human beings and supernatural beings. Those divisions bears out the two ideologies namely the submissiveness to customs and dependency on supernatural beings. Each folktale is analyzed and each folktale delivers particular ideologies. The ideologies might not exist in all the folktales in the same manner. For instance, a folktale might deliver different ideologies from the others. The folktale entitled The Tears of Empu Mburing mainly presents the ideology that society members should obey the customs of the society. It also supports the belief about supernatural being and human being’s the dependency on supernatural beings by narrating the fate of the main character which is dependent to the supernatural being decision. The folktale entitled Siti Fari and Empu Rencak mainly supports the ideology about submissiveness to customs. The delivery of the ideology is by the causal relationship among the narrative events. The conflict is developed by the effort of the main characters to fulfill their desire without violating the customs. The ideology about dependency on supernatural beings is delivered by the part of the plot in which both the main characters ask for supernatural helps in their efforts. They seems unable to get done with their efforts without supernatural helps. The folktale entitled The Mesa Itch also delivers both the ideology of human dependency on supernatural beings and the one of submissiveness to customs. The dependency to supernatural beings is depicted by the obedience of the human character to the supernatural character in overcoming the itching problem. The submissiveness to customs is shown by the mentioning of the custom about eating a particular fish. The supernatural beings set the customs in the past and the custom is believed until now. The folktale entitled The Pirates of Gili Montong presents only the ideology about submissiveness to customs only. The ideology about dependency on supernatural beings is not evident in the folktale. The submissiveness to customs is highlighted by narrating the careless and reckless characteristics of the human characters. Consequently, the human characters become unfortunate due to their negative characteristics.
