3.3.1.3. Attitudinal Analysis
The third means in the microstructure analysis was the analysis of the attitude by using language. In this way, the clauses were analyzed by using the
Language of evaluation by Martin and White 2005 to find out the appraisal towards the characters. This method was looking at the local semantic analysis of
the words characterizing the characters. The following is the example of how the analysis on the local semantic to examine the characteristics was conducted:
31 There hung about her a heavenly fragrance that had a familiar fruity quality... A12123
The sentence attached positive appreciation towards the thing fragrance by introducing fragrance with the adverb heavenly. This appreciation preserved high
value to the thing. This valuation might be interpreted that the character possesses high valuation in the society or at least she was usually regarded as having high
social status that is expected to receive high appreciation from the society. The adverb being combined with the word fragrance that later on is explanatory by the
transitivity as mental description shows that the high valuation occurs in mental processes.
In conducting attitudinal analysis, first, the linguistic units showing the attitude oftoward the characters are classified into categories. The result of this step
was the configuration of positive and negative evaluation toward the characters and by the characters. By the result of the second step, the highly respected groups will
be revealed. The elicitation of the data of this step was done by employing the following table adapting from Martin and White’s 2005: 71 analysis:
Table 3.4. Data Elicitation by Language of Evaluation Appraising
items Appraiser Affect
Judgement Appreciation Appraised
The table will be employed to map the appraisal through the attitude found in the folktales. The attitude mapping is done by assigning particular categories to the
appraising items. The categories of attitudes are symbolized by the abbreviations. The abbreviations are:
+ = positive attitude
- = negative attitude
des = affect: desire
hap = affect: unhappiness sec
= affect: insecurity sat
= affect: dissatisfaction norm = judgement: normality
cap = judgement: capacity
ten = judgement: tenacity
ver = judgement: veracity
prop = judgement: propriety reac = appreciation: reaction
comp = appreciation: composition val
= appreciation: valuation Second, the characters were defined into opposing groups. The groups are
those of the powerful and powerless characters based on the first step. The result of this step is the classification of the characters. By this step, feasibly, the characters
are grouped into two opposing groups.
