The Mesa Itch Plot Analysis

The dream stage starts by the introduction of the options that the pirates have to solve their problem. The pirates, then, opt to follow their desire. They need to sail and find a ship to pirate. This option comes from the leader of the pirate. 7 “He gathered together his most trusted and remoseless men and told them, ‘my brothers, we shall either starve to death or destroy ourselves with pointless in fighting unless we act now’” A12419 The one of the options is related to fighting, an action that they are desired to perform. The previous option does not seem to be an option. The option seems to be rethorical that the leader expects, as a question, the option is not considerable. Thus, the remaining options are to fight each other or to act something else. 8 “...‘Then we must go abroad and seek the ships that no longer pass nearby,’ their leader declared.”A12421 The action that they take is a gratification of their thirsty desire. They dream to kill and to slaugther others. They find that the option might satisfy their desire. The dream stage ends when they think they have found the land to pirate. The frustration stage of the story seems to be very obvious. The pirates conduct the slaugther and the killing once they set their feet on the island. 8 “Screams and cries filled the air, then began to subdise until, just the last soul was murdered , ...” A12434 They might satisfy their lust by killing and slaughtering. They do actions remoselessly. They killed all the people there. The stage moves into the next stage just in time the pirates realize that they killed their own people. The nightmare stage presents the lose of bonds between the slaugtering pirates and the people that they have slaugther. It turns out that they forget to untie their boat. The pirates, then, regret of what they have done. Their regret comes into the action of rowing blindly into the sea. The destruction or death wish stage is signified the fate of the characters. They realized that their deeds are wrong. They learn to live as fishermen in the island of Komodo. In the story, the pirates become silent. The characteristic of tragedy that the main character ends up living alone is realized. The loneliness is not in terms of the existance of people surrounding them but in terms of their lost of kins and family. This fate is a consequence of the pirates’ careless and reckless decisions and actions.

4.1.1.5. The Dragon Princess of Komodo

The Dragon Princess of Komodo tells a story of the origin of Komodo island’s people and the Komodo. The society preserves the power to control its members by means of the story. Specifically, it is a media to deliver the custom about living together with komodo dragons. The dragons are considered as the society’s siblings. Therefore, the members of the society should not hunt the dragons. The story presents also the supernatural beings role in preserving the ideology, and therefore, in preserving the power controlling the members. The supernatural being in the story has a significant role. The role of the supernatural being is as the messenger of the custom. As mentioned before, the supernatural being preserves the powerful control over the society member. First, the apparition of the supernatural being is recognized as the main characters mother. 9 “With this, the vision of their mother dissappeared” A12569 Being the main characters’ mother is significant since she must be the wife of Empu Najo, the most significant person in the society. Empu Najo is the hero who saves the society from Bajo people’s attack. He is the one who asks the society to move to the mountain. Evenmore, the village is called after his name. Thus, the mother is highly respected. The words uttered by her should be very considerable to the society. Second, the mother appears in a form of vision or apparition. A vision or apparition as a form of supernatural being is powerful to conduct any actions that common human beings cannot do. 10 “Instantly, all the memories from his childhood came back to him and si Gerong fell to his kness ” A12567 When she does so, it brings amazement to any human beings. The apparition raises the human main character’s childhood memories and recalls his mind to Orah. The human character falls into his kness due to the amazement. The words and actions of a supernatural being seem to be more respected than any of human beings. Table 4.6. The Plot Development in The Dragon Princess of Komodo No Stages Highlighting Events 1. Anticipation Stage The settings of the story and the characteristics of the main characters are introduced. The monster and its stranges are introduced. 2. Dream Stage The male character’s characteristics are introduced 3. Frustation Stage The male character goes hunting and meets his sister, the dragon. 4. Nightmare Stage - 5. Thrilling escape from the death and the death of the monster The male character and the dragon do not fight and live in their homes. The story needs to be treated in a particular way since it does not meet any plot types proposed by Booker 2004. However, the closest type of plot that might be appropriate to analyse the story is Overcoming The Monster. The elements of this plot type in the story need also to be adjusted. The monsters can take human, animal, and the combination of both 2004: 23. For sure, the monsters should be antagonistic. Yet, in this story, the monster is not really antagonistic. She is the sister of the male character. She does not posses the characteristics of monsters meant by Booker in Overcoming The Monster. She is physically a monster, a dragon. She just follows her instincts. The anticipation stage of the story sets the settings of the story and introduces the main character and the monster. The setting of the story tells about the society’s living. In the very beginning, the society migrates to a mountain to avoid the attack from Bajo people. This makes them learning the ways of living i.e.: hunting, gardening and cultivating the land. Previously they live from the sea. This background also explains the birth of the main characters. They are born by using a traditional knife since the one who usually helps somebody giving birth, the dukung, has been taken by Bajo people. The main characters are male human character and female komodo dragon. The male human character is called Gerong and the female dragon is Orah. Adjusted to this type of plot, the human character seems to be the protagonist while the female komodo dragon is the antagonist. The call as a part of this stage should contain the urge to confront the monster. However, in this story, the call is adjusted to the different condition and the nature of the monster which make her casted away from the society.
