Intertextuality with Other Tales

presents the ideology that society members should obey the customs of the society. It also supports the belief about supernatural being and human being’s the dependency on supernatural beings by narrating the fate of the main character which is dependent to the supernatural being decision. The folktale entitled Siti Fari and Empu Rencak mainly supports the ideology about submissiveness to customs. The delivery of the ideology is by the causal relationship among the narrative events. The conflict is developed by the effort of the main characters to fulfill their desire without violating the customs. The ideology about dependency on supernatural beings is delivered by the part of the plot in which both the main characters ask for supernatural helps in their efforts. They seems unable to get done with their efforts without supernatural helps. The folktale entitled The Mesa Itch also delivers both the ideology of human dependency on supernatural beings and the one of submissiveness to customs. The dependency to supernatural beings is depicted by the obedience of the human character to the supernatural character in overcoming the itching problem. The submissiveness to customs is shown by the mentioning of the custom about eating a particular fish. The supernatural beings set the customs in the past and the custom is believed until now. The folktale entitled The Pirates of Gili Montong presents only the ideology about submissiveness to customs only. The ideology about dependency on supernatural beings is not evident in the folktale. The submissiveness to customs is highlighted by narrating the careless and reckless characteristics of the human characters. Consequently, the human characters become unfortunate due to their negative characteristics. The folktale entitled The Dragon Princes of Komodo might be a tool to deliver the ideology as the custom of the nowadays society through the utilization of supernatural stories. The main custom requires the people of Komodo Island to live side by side with the Komodo dragons. This custom is delivered by the existence of the folktale in which a supernatural being asks them to do so. Thus, in other words, this folktale presents the ideology about submissiveness to custom by the beliefs about supernatural beings. The last folktale entitled The Sad Tale of Ina Materia is also particular. It mainly focus on preserving the ideology about faithfulness in a marriage relationship. This ideology becomes a custom in the society. The society members should obey this custom. The supernatural beings do not prominently mentioned but the supernatural power exists. The fate of the main character depends on the supernatural power. Conclusively, from the plot analysis, two ideologies becomes foregrounded. The two ideologies take parts in the development of the folktales through the causal relationships of the narrative events. The ideologies might not present in each folktale but each folktale contributes in the building of the ideology. The second analysis to extract the general meaning is by the topic analysis. Topic analysis supports the revelation of the ideologies by generalizing and constructing the macropropositions from the folktales The analysis results in the revelation of the three discourse topics namely the powerlessness of human beings, the submissiveness to customs, and the dependency on supernatural beings or power. The topic about powerlessness of human being is evident and prominent in the folktales. It seems to be the main ideology of the folktales. However, this topic is supportive to the other two topics. For instance, the society members should obey the customs since they are powerless as individuals. Human beings depend on supernatural beings because they are powerless to live independently. Although the topic about human being powerlessness is a kind of subtopic for the other two topics, its presence is evident and prominent in the folktales. Thus, in the microstructure analysis, this topic becomes a base in analyzing the micro linguistic units. The macrostructure analysis becomes the basis of the microstructure analysis. In answering the second problem, he microstructure analysis is conducted in three ways namely the transitivity analysis, the modality analysis, and attitudinal analysis. Since the basis is the findings of the macrostructure analysis, those three microstructure analysis focus on finding the evidence of the three discourse topics as the building blocks of the two ideologies. The folktales employ four types of processes in revealing the topics and the ideologies, namely material processes, mental processes, verbal processes, and relational processes. The topic about human powerlessness becomes the most prominent topic in transitivity analysis. The second most prominent topic is the submissiveness to customs. The least prominent topic is the one about the dependency to supernatural beings. This frequency is expected because the topic about human powerlessness might support both of the other topics. Thus, its high frequency might be expected. The topic about supernatural beings becomes the least prominent since this topic does not present in all the folktales. Material processes dominate the frequency in all the topic. The second most prominent type of process differs in the topics. The prominent frequency signifies particular interpretation. For instance, material processes represent the actions of doing and happening. Thus, all the topics rely on the action of doing and happening of the characters for the delivery. In the topic about human powerlessness the transitivity analysis presents the interpretations based on the prominent types of processes. The depiction of the topic by material processes is by representing the action of the human characters in the folktales. The human characters are not represented idle or totally weak. However, they are depicted to be able to do common habitual tasks and actions. Their actions are limited to their habits and routines. The mental processes are realized mostly by the cognitive type. This signifies that the powerlessness of human being is rational and logical. The verbal processes of this topic dominantly presents the sayer- verbiage configuration. This means that only one participant in communication is involved. The focus in also in the message of the process presented in the verbiage. The least transitivity process is the relational processes. The relational processes represents the topic of human powerlessness by attributive processes. In other words, the human characters are attached to powerless attributes. The transitivity analysis supports the topic about dependency on supernatural beings by particular occurrences of the types of transitivity processes. This topic also mainly supported by material processes. The material processes might be in operative or receptive mode. In operative mode, the human characters are as the goals. In the receptive mode, the human characters become the passive participant of the processes. The mental processes is similar to the previous topic by mainly employing cognitive processes. The verbal processes are also realized by
