Conclusions CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

particular interpretation. For instance, material processes represent the actions of doing and happening. Thus, all the topics rely on the action of doing and happening of the characters for the delivery. In the topic about human powerlessness the transitivity analysis presents the interpretations based on the prominent types of processes. The depiction of the topic by material processes is by representing the action of the human characters in the folktales. The human characters are not represented idle or totally weak. However, they are depicted to be able to do common habitual tasks and actions. Their actions are limited to their habits and routines. The mental processes are realized mostly by the cognitive type. This signifies that the powerlessness of human being is rational and logical. The verbal processes of this topic dominantly presents the sayer- verbiage configuration. This means that only one participant in communication is involved. The focus in also in the message of the process presented in the verbiage. The least transitivity process is the relational processes. The relational processes represents the topic of human powerlessness by attributive processes. In other words, the human characters are attached to powerless attributes. The transitivity analysis supports the topic about dependency on supernatural beings by particular occurrences of the types of transitivity processes. This topic also mainly supported by material processes. The material processes might be in operative or receptive mode. In operative mode, the human characters are as the goals. In the receptive mode, the human characters become the passive participant of the processes. The mental processes is similar to the previous topic by mainly employing cognitive processes. The verbal processes are also realized by the configuration of sayer-verbiage. The most dominant type in the relational processes is the carrier-attribute configuration. The topic about submissiveness to customs is supported by prominent types of transitivity and the frequency. The most prominent topic is the material processes. The depiction is similar to the one in the human powerlessness. Besides that human characters conducts actions of their habits, their actions are related to cultural activities or role. The mental processes is dominated by cognitive processes. The verbal processes dominantly employ sayer-verbiage configuration. The relational processes frequently utilize carrier-attribute processes. The modality analysis supports the findings of macrostructure analysis findings by focusing on the meanings of the modals in the clauses. The topic about human powerlessness is mainly supported by modals of probability. The low probability is more frequent than the high ones. It can be interpreted that the actions of human being is low in the probability to happen. The topic about dependency on supernatural being is built mainly by the frequent occurrences of probability. The probability is in medium degree. This might signify that the processes or the actions related to supernatural beings are more likely to happen than those related to human. The topic about submissiveness to customs dominantly utilizes usuality. The usuality depicts the routines or habits of the members of the society in order to support the topic and the ideology. The last microstructure analysis is the utilization of the attitudinal analysis. The analysis is the extension of the interpersonal function in Systemic Functional Linguistics. The most prominent attitude in all of the folktales is the affect. Affect depicts the positive and negative feelings. In the topic of human powerlessness, affect is dominantly realized by negative happiness, negative security, and negative satisfaction. Those negative feelings represent sad feelings, insecurity, and the feelings of displeasure of human characters. In the topic of dependency on supernatural beings, affects are also dominated by negative happiness and negative security. Yet, those negative attitudes are related to supernatural beings. The negative happiness leads to the help of supernatural beings and the negative insecurity is caused by the supernatural beings’ actions. In the topic of submissiveness to customs, affects are realized in positive happiness and negative security. The positive happiness resembles the ideal conditions of the society. The negative security resembles the relationships among societies that often in conflicts. The negative security might also come from the inside of the society in terms of the relations among the society members. Judgments are also present in the topics. In the topic about human powerlessness, the most prominent kinds of judgments are the positive and negative capacity and negative tenacity. The positive capacity is in line with the findings in modality analysis that the human capacity is on predictable actions such as the routines or habits. The negative capacity is observable in the failure of perceiving the surroundings and in the lack of knowledge. The negative tenacity supports the topic by proofing that human being is not dependable. In the topic of dependency on supernatural beings depicts the capability of human being in calling for help from supernatural beings. In the topic of submissiveness to customs, judgment is not prominent in supporting the topic. Another kind of attitude, the appreciation, also respectively supports the building of the topics. In the topic about human powerlessness, appreciation mostly appears in the form of positive and negative reactions and negative composition. The negative reactions evidently present the negative valuation towards the surrounding that the human characters pay attention much to. It represents the vulnerability of human beings into some negative things. The positive reaction supports the topic by mentioning positive valuation to something but not to the human characters. The negative composition presents the terrible conditions of the human character surrounding which the human characters might not fix. In the topic about human dependency on supernatural beings, the appreciation is realized by positive reactions and positive compositions. The positive reactions are addressed to supernatural beings. They are considered having high values and quality. The positive compositions depict the supernatural beings as the ones in their positive appearances and looks. In the submissiveness to customs, the appreciation appears dominantly in positive valuation and reaction. The positive valuation refers to the hierarchical high social status in the society and to anything related to it. The positive reaction presents the reactions of the society members to something that is regarded valuable in the society. This signifies the existence of social agreement in the values. The topics and the ideologies exist outside the cultures of the observed folktales. This serves an intertextuality of the ideologies. This intertextuality signifies that the ideologies that human beings are powerless, that society members should obey the customs, and that supernatural beings and powers exists and dependable are common in human civilization. However, the practice of the delivery of the ideology needs to be evaluated and accessed continuously regarding the advancement of human civilization. In the practice, since the ideologies might be so hegemonic that it is transparent, human being as the agent of ideological practice should be cautious in their actions.

5.2. Recommendations

After conducting the research for this thesis, the writer suggests at least three recommendations for similar researches in similar field, especially in the field of Critical Discourse Analysis of Folktales. The first recommendation is in relation to the object of data. Future researchers might conduct similar research on different folktales as the data. More research on folktales would draw more general findings. For Indonesian researchers, the folktales from Indonesia seems to be interesting to study since Indonesia is rich of traditional oral and written cultures. Hopefully in the future, the patterns of the ways ideologies are depicted in folktales can be mapped more systematically. The second recommendation is in relation to the methodology of the research. This thesis does not employ the thematic structure analysis as the textual function in Systemic Functional Linguistics. Instead, this thesis conducts the ideational and interpersonal function analysis. The future researchers might apply the textual analysis by using thematic structure analysis or other analysis on any Critical Discourse Analysis. Although the possibility of the prominent utilization of the thematic structure depends on the type of the data, the findings of textual analysis might draw different conclusions. The third recommendation is related to the complexity of the analysis. Critical Discourse Analysis is an interdisciplinary study that it might include many fields of study. Future researchers might conduct a similar study on folktales by deeper analysis from other fields of study. 231 BIBLIOGRAPHY Abram, M. 2009. Glossary of Literary Terms.
