Harmer 2007, p.83 explains other characteristics of adolescents, those are most of them recognize their learning need and know the goal of their learning. Adolescents may be responsible for what they are asked to do and relate what they do with their interests. Hence, this situation emphasizes on making the learning relevant to students’ live. When students see how what they study is relevant to them, they become excited about learning and bring a passion to the classroom. Therefore, adolescents are passionate about everything —about friendship and about what their beliefs might be Checkley, 2004.

C. Related Research Reports

There are several research that had been conducted related to text-based learning and general English for college studetnts. The first research is conducted by Miyoun Kim 2008. The study focused on genre-based approach to teach writing for Korean students. The main goal of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of genre-based approach to teach writing. The researcher examined the definition of genre-based approach, practical application of genre approach, and how to apply genre approach. The result showed that genre approach works best when it is joined with the process approach. In the combined process called the process-genre approach, the final goal is reached through a sequence of several activities undertaken after learners understand the structural and linguistic features of a particular situation as reflected in a text. Therefore, if the process and genre approach are balanced in the curriculum, students will better improve their writing 54 skills through experiencing a whole writing process as well as realizing the social functions of genres and the contexts in which these genres are used. The next studies had been conducted in Indonesia. The studies are related to college English problems focusing on the learning strategy, developing program, and particular skills. Hendriani 2013 conducted Research and Development in which a model of learning strategy of speaking English was developed based on the learning strategies applied by proficient English speakers among the language learners. The research is aimed at developing an appropriate model of learning strategy to improve students’ speaking skills and finding out the effectiveness of the developed learning strategy model in improving the students’ speaking skills. The result showed that there are several appropriate learning strategies in teaching speaking for college students which can help students overcome their psychological, social, managerial, and linguistic problems before and during speaking English. Another study related to research and development is intended to design model of instructional vocabulary material through reading for college students Nugraheni, 2014. The material is provided for the English class before the students prepare themselves for the working environment. In the study, reading is also considered as the appropriate aid in the learning process because students are able to learn new information, especially about their field, through reading. The product was a template of learning material model which covered warming up, reading section, comprehension questions, part of speech, vocabulary in context, and using appropriate vocabulary.
