–en The suffix –en does not change in the form when it is attached to the base forms ending with consonants in order to from the verbs. Examples. length + -en = lengthen ‘to make or become longer ‘ fright + -en = frighten ‘ to make or to become fright ‘ sharp + -en = sharpen ‘ to make something sharp ‘

The prefix pe- does not change in the form when it is attached to the base forms beginning with consonants in order to create the verbs.
