1. Longdon: SYMBOLS are a
language that can help us understand our past.
As the saying goes,
a picture says a thousand words.
But which words? Interpret for me, please, this symbol. First
thing that comes to mind. √
√ √
Longdon states on his presentation that if symbol can help people to understand the past, a symbol must be
something which can say a thousand words . However,
something which can say a thousand words is not always
a symbol. So, the bold sentences can be classified as one- way entailment as they entail in one direction. Therefore,
the speaker, Longdon, stresses the word symbol as he wants the listeners to be more focused on it. Therefore, in
order to detect the entailment, contexted clause approach is applied by identifying the occurrence of flattening
between the sentences. As a result, the first sentence is flattened in the second sentence, so entailment is detected.
2. Longdon: That is his TRIDENT. A
symbol of power to millions of the ancients
. Now this symbol. √
√ √
When Robert Longdon shows a painting of Poseidon holding a trident, he states the trident is a symbol of
power. The thickened sentences entail each other in two- way because both sentences paraphrase each other.
Therefore, Longdon stresses the word trident in order to show that he wants the hearers to pay attention to this
word because this word is the most important part of the current discussion. Moreover, the capitalized word has a
relation with the word power, even though both cannot
