Representing and Reshaping Reality
c. Framing the Political Message
Textual function of language refers to the fact that language has mechanisms to make any stretch of spoken or written discourse into a coherent and unified text as a flow of information. From the choice made to fill the theme position in the independent clauses in texts, the text are structured to show the main focus that get all discourse in frame. The textual theme, interpersonal theme, and the marked circumstantial theme are thus crucial to the organization, interpretation and construal of meaning. The type chosen textual theme found in the addresses is mostly the ―additive‖ presented by conjunction ―and‖. ―And‖ as the given textual theme shows that all the mentioned obligations are equally important regarding that ―and‖ gives also a parallel level in linking the clauses. Therefore, the ideas in each sentence are made into a coherence showing that they are in the same level of importance for the speaker. The interpersonal theme shows the use of the vocative which is effective to invite the people to agree on his ideology. It also shows that Obama is aware of his position which is the leader of America. Having the highest position in the state means is what enables him to speak to all Americans in such way. There is also the use the projecting clauses using mental or verbal process that make a strong stance of the speaker toward the idea that he speak about. He does not use the projecting clause in the form of indirect address but he uses it to speak on the behalf of the people. This choice shows that a speaker has a strong conviction on the topic he talks about. The last thing considered important in the textual function analysis is the marked circumstantial adjunct. By placing the circumstantial adjuncts as marked theme, Obama drives the people to have the same framework to the matter that is spoken that results as a positive attitude toward his term of service. This is seen from how he sets the message to be first affected by the circumstance he puts in the initial position of the sentences.B. Suggestion
The way discourse is structured does not merely expose the tangible goal of the speaker. The addressees are influenced to accept those goals as theirs and unconsciously become the subject of power. They no longer produce the meaning based on the self-reasoning and also do not realize that other importance has affected the way they act and think. This study does the critic to the attempt which tries to keep the status quo of social condition which is stabilized to serve theParts
