Background of the Research

Based on the descriptions in the previous part, the researcher formulates the research problems as follows. 1. What are the English loan words found in the Indonesian version of Angels and Demons novel? 2. What is the spelling changes happened to the English loan words in the Indonesian version of Angels and Demons novel? 3. What is the translation method used to translate the English loan words in the Indonesian version of Angels and Demons novel?

C. Objectives of the Research

Based on the formulation of the problems above, the objectives of the research are as follows: 1. To describe the types of English loan words found in the Indonesian version of Angels and Demons novel, 2. To describe the spelling changes of the English loan words found in the Indonesian version of Angels and Demons novel, and 3. To describe the translation method used to translate the English loan words in the Indonesian version of Angels and Demons novel.

D. Significance of the Research

In accordance with the formulation of the problems and the objectives of the research, this study is expected to give contribution to the following parties: 1. Students of the study program of English Language and Literature majoring in linguistics study. The result of this research will be used as contribution in understanding the translation using loan words. 2. Readers of this study. The result of the research is expected to provide data, information and examples of the translation technique, specifically the translation using English loan words. 3. Other researchers concerning on the study of loan word. The result of the study is expected will be useful as a starting point to conduct a further research. 6

CHAPTER II LITERATURE REVIEW

This chapter is consist into four parts, namely theoretical descriptions, conceptual framework, and analytical construct. The theorecital description covers the definition of translation, loan words, spelling adjustment, translation method and summary of Angels and Demons novel. The previous studies part describes brief explanation of studies related to loan words. The conceptual framework explains the theories applied by the researcher, while the analytical construct provides a concept map of the theories employed in this thesis.

1. Translation a. Notions of Translation

Nowadays, there are a number of translation definitions made by translation experts. Newmark 1988:5 defines translation as transferring the meaning of the Source Language SL text into the Target Language TL in the way that the author intended the text. This idea is the same as what Larson 1984:3 conveys that translation is basically a change of form from the SL into the TL that refers to the actual words, phrases, clauses, sentence, and paragraph etc, which is spoken or written. This means that in translating the text‟s meaning of the SL must be the same with that in TL.
