The Adjustment of the English Loan Words in the Novel

TL. The spelling adjustment from Eclectic to Eklektik is the adjustment of single consonant C into K two times and the adjustment of suffix “c” into “k”. The third example is the SL Epic which is adapted into the loan word Epik in TL. Epic  Epik Datum, 97SL474TL613 Epic is English loan word in the form of simple word because, the SL Epic only undergoes spelling adjustment into TL Epik. Epic only change an adjustment of vowel c in SL into vowel k in TL.

b. Complex Word

The second type of English loan word found in the novel is complex word. The characteristic of English loan word in the form of complex word is the adjustment of spelling and pronunciation at the same time. However, in this study the researcher does not discuss about the pronunciation adjustment. The first example of complex word is the word Music in SL which is translates into musik in TL. Music  Musik Datum, 22SL12TL28 Music in the SL is a complex loan word because it determine of two adjustments; spelling and pronunciation adjustment. The first adjustment is spelling. The adjustment is the changing C into single K. The word music in the SL and the word musik in the TL, makes different pronunciation from its original English word into Bahasa Indonesia. The second example is the word Friksi. The word friction in SL which is translates into friksi in TL. Friction  Friksi Datum, 36SL23TL43 Friction is a loan word in the form of complex word. It is complex word because it undergoes two adjustments. First is adjustment in the spelling. The spelling adjustment of Friction to friksi is the replacement of consonant “c” with “k” and suffix “ion” becomes “si”. The third example of complex word is the word phase in the SL which is translates into fase in the TL. Ph ase  Fase Datum, 13SL9TL25 Phase in SL which is adjusted into Fase in TL. The SL Phase undergoes spelling and pronunciation adjustment into TL Fase. The adjustment is double consonants “ph” becomes “f” and it makes adjustment in the way pronouncing the word too.

c. Translated Word

The third type of English loan word found in the novel is translated word. Translated word is the SL word which is translated into Indonesian based on the Indonesian grammatical rule. The first example of English loan word in the form of translated word is Oak in SL which is adjusted into Ek in TL. Oak  Ek Datum 40SL27TL48
