b. Students’ Perception Based on the Interview

There were 8 students participated in the interview. The researcher proposed several questions dealing with their understanding on the meaning of worksheet, lecturers’ expectation by giving worksheet to them, and how they 44 made use worksheet for test preparation. Furthermore, the researcher draw a conclusion about their perception based on those questions. From the interview about their surface understanding on what they knew about worksheet, most participant; participant A, C, D, G said that worksheet had a value of assessment see Appendix 9. They stated that worksheet could be a media to help them to measure their understanding of a material. In addition, participant A stated that either worksheet was given before or after the lecturer explained the material it still had function as an assessment. Participant G added that worksheet was not a test but it referred to assessment which facilitated students to review the material. Another answer was stated by participant B and E in which they argued worksheet as summary or questions of a material to help them comprehend the material better since it provided important points of a material and offered efficiency in time to understand and to review the material. Participants F and H defined worksheet as exercises or task from the lecturers. From the answers they stated, they were clearly described that 6 participants had positive perception on their own understanding of worksheet while 2 others had fair perception. Responding to statement number 1 in the close-ended questionnaire, the researcher asked the participants deeper if worksheet could really help them understand the material better. The researcher found there were 6 participants who personally agreed that worksheet could really help them understand the material. Participant A stated that in completing worksheet, one advantage was that students would read it more than once; meaning that students read the textbook or 45 at least friends’ works then wrote the answers and, realized or not, students reread what they had written on their own worksheet. According to participant C, worksheet could help students understanding the material more because sometimes lecturers used simpler language than it was on the textbook, and it really made easy the students to understand more. Two other participants admitted that worksheet did not help them much. The reason was that sometimes they could not easily grasp the intention of the exercises so they were lost in doing it. Researcher also asked further about participants’ opinion on the use of worksheet for test preparation. Researcher found that all participants admitted to use worksheets to study before the test see Appendix 9. They preferred to read the worksheet than the textbook since worksheets had already contained important points of the material. In addition, six participants, namely participant B, C, D, F, G, and H, admitted that the lecturers often used the exercises on the worksheet for the test. Based on the data acquired from the questionnaire and interview, it can be concluded that most participants had positive perception on worksheet seen from how students perceived the purpose of worksheet in learning process. They believed that worksheet could help them to understand the material better, but still a few of them considered worksheet could help students to enhance independence in learning. However, it is undeniable that a small number or students perceived the purpose of worksheet negatively. 46
