CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
This chapter is aimed at concluding and giving suggestions based on the research which had been conducted by the writer. The final results of this research
are to answer the two questions elaborated in the problem formulation. The first question is about the reasons of the use of code-switching in Cosmogirl Indonesia
Magazine. Then, the second question is the readers’ opinion on the use of code- switching in Cosmogirl Indonesia Magazine.
A. Conclusions
After examining the whole data, the writer concluded two main points. First is about the possible reasons of code-switching. Second point is about the
readers’ opinion on code-switching phenomenon which occured in Comsmogirl Indonesia Magazine.
Dealing with the possible reasons of code-switching, the writer found that there were seven kinds of reasons of code-switching which occured in Cosmogirl
Indonesia Magazine. They were lack of facility, lack of register, mood of the speaker, point emphasis, habitual experience, to show identity with a group, and
attention attraction. Meanwhile, the reasons which were not found in Cosmogirl Indonesia Magazine were semantic significance, to address different audience,
and pragmatic reasons.
66 The most dominant reasons found in Cosmogirl Indonesia Magazine of
June 2010 edition were lack of facility and attention attraction. In the writer’s opinion, the magazine has communicative purpose in this situation. Since there
are many English words which are more popular than equivalence words in Bahasa Indonesia, the magazine prefers to use English words in which the readers
are more familiar with. It aims to communicate more effectively. In addition, it can carry on a smooth conversation in information conveyed inside the chosen
magazine. The second reason is attention attraction. Since this research deals with the analysis of code-switching in the written context, which is the instrument
being observed is a mass media that contains many information and advertisements, the writer found that code-switching is a strategy from the
magazine to attract the readers to have curiosity to read
.
The other functions found in the chosen magazine were point emphasis, lack of register, mood of the speaker, habitual experience, and to show identity
with a group. A side of the dominant reasons which have significance number of code-switching cases, these reasons also have functions which are also important
for readers in getting information from the magazine. Dealing with the readers’ opinion on the code-switching phenomenon
which occured in Cosmogirl Indonesia Magazine, the writer found a relevance point between the reasons of code-switching and the opinion of the readers on the
phenomenon. From the first problem formulation, it can be concluded that the magazine used code-switching in terms of lack of facility expression and attention
attraction. While from the readers’ opinion, the writer points out that the use of
67 code-switching in the magazine may create a smooth and natural conversation. In
these two points, there is a relevant essence that Cosmogirl Indonesia Magazine used code-switching in order to build an effective communication. It could be
seen by the use of code-switching aims to have a comprehensible information for the readers.
Another finding which had been found by the writer in this research is the use of code-switching is seen as a way to support English language development.
From the result and discussion, it can be drawn up that the use of code-switching in Cosmogirl Magazine may enrich vocabularies for readers. The use of English
terms in Cosmogirl Indonesia Magazine can develop the readers’ store of English vocabulary and expressions. In other words, by reading the magazine, the readers
will obtain two advantages. First, information and entertainment from the content of the magazines and second, the readers unconsciously attain vocabulary
enrichment. On the other hand, the use of code-switching in Cosmogirl Indonesia
Magazine also has disadvantage in terms of the existence of certain words in Bahasa Indonesia. It can be drawn up that the use of code-switching may reduce
the familiarity of certain words in Bahasa Indonesia. In fact, nowadays there are many English words and expressions which are more popular than their
equivalence in Bahasa Indonesia.
