The conversation shows that they talked about a word, prediction. Socrates assumed that prediction is the same as assumption. Rose herself tried to agree
Socrates’ opinion. Suddenly, the silent moment appeared in their conversation. Then, Socrates produced filler Ehm to avoid the silence in the middle of the talk.
This expression is to break the silence, that is, to continue the talk.
8. Expressing Friendship or Camaraderie
Expressing friendship aims to show that speakers and listeners have good relationship and have already known the characteristic. This function also shows
that people should encourage, give feedback or opinions, and give advice to others Gabor and Power, 2011:124. The expressions including expressing friendship
are expressing wishes, congratulating, agreeing on something, apologizing, thanking, giving compliments, criticizing indirectly, saying bad words, mocking,
joking, pacifying someone, encouraging, and sympathizing Jumanto, 2014:11- 13.
The analysis reveals that the conversation created by the couple of males, and the couple of a male and a female student shows the function of expressing
friendship. It has been found that 14 utterances showing 1.3 appeared in conversation. One of the expressions used was mocking found in the conversation
between Socrates and Rose. The conversation can be illustrated in excerpt 64. Excerpt 64
Context : Socrates told about the way to play the game.
Rose argued that the size of the game was so big,
then it could make her cellphone error. Rose
: And it makes my phone hang. Hang? [laughing] What

Socrates : ERROR. ERROR.
Rose : Nah
Socrates : You have to consult your dictionary = Very often. =
Ap547-50 The data shows that Socrates and Rose talked about a vocabulary, Hang.
Socrates said that she needed to consult Rose’s dictionary. It was a kind of mocking but expressing friendship. In this case, the present researcher argues that
mocking might only be used for people who have already known or have been close to each other. In addition, they must be accustomed to doing that in
communication.
9. Expressing Solidarity
Expressing solidarity aims to support others’ feeling or thought. Solidarity
might also refer to how well people know each other because it can affect the way people talk Holmes, 1992:377. Several expressions showing solidarity are
expressing wishes, congratulating, agreeing on something, apologizing, thanking, giving compliments, criticizing indirectly, saying bad words, mocking and joking
Jumanto, 2014:11-13. Based on the analysis, expressing solidarity has been found in
conversation produced by the couple of male students and the couple of a male and a female student. The frequency is 9 showing 0.8. The following is the
conversation produced by Aan and Mello shows expressing solidarity by expressing bad words in conversation. The excerpt of the conversation is as
follows. Excerpt 65
Context : Aan asked Mello about sports facilities in Yogyakarta,
and finally he told his feeling about the sports facilities in campus, especially for the graduate program.
Aan : Too bad. They don’t facilitate…
Mello : Us.
Aan : Yeah. The magister students with the UKM. That
sucks. Ap215-17
The data explains that Aan and Mello did not join one of the student centers at campus. Aan felt emotional and he used swear word to express his feeling. It is
considered as the expression of solidarity because Aan could feel what others felt. In addition, it also aims to support that he cared about his friend.
Another way of expressing solidarity is also found in females’ conversation, between Star and Hayu. The expression used was agreeing on something. The
conversation can be illustrated as follows. Excerpt 66
Context : Hayu shared her feeling of choosing education stream.
Star : = Yes. = Okay. = So, it is the professional ones?
Hayu : Of course. Ap49-10
Based on the context, Hayu told Star about something disturbing her mind. Hayu thought that she was wrong to choose the stream. She was like frustrated to
face it and she did not enjoy it. Star argued that Hayu chose the stream because of the professional reason. Hayu did not follow her desire to take what she really
wanted. Star’s opinion was right and Hayu agreed on it. Hayu regretted it very much and wanted to change her deci
sion if possible. Hayu’s reply Of course shows solidarity since this expression indicates that she agreed on what Star said.
This expression is to break the silence, that is, to continue the talk.
10. Expressing Empathy
Expressing empathy aims to share and understand other’s feeling.
