Socrates : Okay. Let’s go See you
Mello : Bye.
Socrates : Bye. Ap158-61
Excerpt 19 shows that the expressions of parting are See you and Bye. Mello expressed parting showing that he had to go to the place where Mello and
Socrates had decided. Then, Socrates replied with Okay. Let’s go See you showing that he invited Mello to go and meet him to that place. The expression of
Bye ends their conversation. Another finding shows that Al and Esti, also expressed parting. They used it
as a way to close conversation. The example of the conversation is in excerpt 20. Excerpt 20
Context : Esti and Al had a lecture on the timetable for that day.
Esti : So, see you in class.
Al : See you and let’s move. Ap657-58
The conversation illustrates that they expressed leave-taking in the end of conversation. Esti used the expression see you in class showing that they probably
had a class to attend after having chit-chat. Al, then, said see you and let’s move showing that he also joined the same class, and finally invited her to go in the
class.
9. Saying Bad Words
The expression of saying bad words describes that speakers or listeners express bad words swear words to insult someone or to emphasize something.
The finding shows that the two couples of male students and the couple of a male and a female student used this expression. It has been found that 10 utterances
showing 1.0 were in their conversation. The first example is the conversation PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
between Socrates and Mello. The excerpt of the conversation can be seen in the following details.
Excerpt 21 Context
: Socrates and Mello talked about their assignments and impressions of certain subjects.
Mello : So, I’m having a piece of cake. Literally.
Socrates : Literally. Not idiomatically?
Mello : No No No No No
Socrates : Oh Uhm. What the FUCK is idiomatic Ap120-23
The context describes that they talked about their assignments and impressions of certain subjects. Mello produced a phrase a piece of cake. Socrates
thought that the phrase was like the idiom, but Mello had different idea about the phrase, a piece of cake. After that, Socrates expressed bad words What the FUCK
is idiomatic in order to emphasize that he did not care whether it included idiomatic or literal meaning.
Similarly, the conversation between Socrates and Rose was also found the expression of bad words. In this conversation, Socrates was the person who also
produced bad words. The following is the excerpt of the conversation. Excerpt 22
Context : Rose and Socrates talked about the importance of
buying O’Grady’s book.
Rose : It’s O’Grady’s book that we use in linguistic class.
Socrates : Who the HELL is O’Grady?
Rose : [laughing] He is my father. Ap594-96
It can be interpreted that Rose told Socrates about the book written by O’Grady. Socrates did not really know who O’Grady was, then he used bad
words, Who the HELL is O’Grady?. This expression is to know the details about O’Grady and of course, the book.
