12. Thanking

The expression of thanking shows appreciation for people who have given something, such as compliment, gift, response, or time. The finding shows that there were 7 utterances of thanking or 0.7. The couple of male students and the two couples of a male and a female student produced this expression. The first data shows that Aan and Mello expressed thanking to a friend after chit-chatting. In addition, the expressions of thanking might be produced to respect each other after the conversation done. The other couple who produced the expression of thanking was Al and Esti. They expressed thanking at the end of conversation. The conversation is as follows. Excerpt 27 Context : After parting, Esti and Al thanked each other. Esti : Thank you. Al : Thank you. Ap659-60 The data of the conversation shows that the expression of thanking was at the end of conversation. Therefore, the present researcher can say that Esti said Thank you firstly because she had time to chat to Al. Moreover, Al produced the same expression automatically. The present researcher assumes that it was to appreciate that Esti had been a good listener during the conversation.

13. Apologizing

The expression of apologizing appears in conversation when speakers or listeners have done something wrong. The finding shows that 2 utterances of apologizing or 0.2 representing that only the couple of female students expressed apologizing. The example of the conversation is in excerpt 28. Excerpt 28 Context : Sri and Maria were enjoying talking about the food. Sri suddenly asked again about Maria’s next activities since she did not get the answer yet. Sri : And so…you haven’t answered my question, = I mean what will you do after this? = Maria : = Ehm = Oh ya…[laughing]. Oh, I’m sorry. I was... ehm… Actually I’m planning to…maybe sleep first. [laughing] Ap326-27 The excerpt of the conversation clearly shows that Maria said the expression of apologizing. Maria said Oh, I’m sorry in order to realize that she made mistakes, that is, because she did not answer Sri’s previous question. Actually, Maria did it unintentionally, but she thought that it was a mistake then she apologized to Sri.

14. Expressing Wishes

The expression of wishes aims to hope someone reaching his success. It is found that only the couple of a male and a female student, Al and Esti, produced this expression. They produced 2 utterances showing 0.2. The following is the excerpt of the conversation. Excerpt 29 Context : Before closing chit-chat, Esti and Al expressed wishes to each other. Esti : Okay, Al. Good luck for your study = and for your . Al : = And good luck for your studies. Ap653-54 The excerpt of the conversation shows that Esti expressed Okay, Al. Good luck for your study to Al before closing the conversation. It can be assumed that the expression produced by Esti is to keep Al’s spirit in order to get the best achievement. In addition, Al also expressed the same wishes hoping that Esti would also succeed in her study.

15. Pacifying

The expression of pacifying explains that one needs to make others calm if he feels annoyed or worried. The finding shows that the two couples of female students produced this expression.
