in the International office in an institution. Then, Esti was extremely astonished to know Al’s job. Esti’s expression aims to give appreciation to him that it might be
difficult to get that job, especially in the International office.
7. Joking
The expression of joking is to show that one can make people laugh. The finding shows that there were 15 utterances of joking or 1.5 produced by the
couple of males and the couple of a male and a female student. The first example is the conversation of Aan and Mello. The excerpt of the conversation can be

who looked like a singer named Alicia Keys. Aan

The context shows that Aan and Mello talked about one of their girl friends. Aan argued that his friend looked like Alicia Keys, a singer. Mello was not quite

8. Parting
This communicative function is to end the conversation done by a speaker or a listener. Coupland 2000:43 states that parting exchanges occurring in the
closing phases of interactions are also obvious manifestation of small talk. Based on the data, the results indicate that 13 utterances of parting or 1.3 were found in
conversation excluding the conversation of the couple of females and of the couple of a male and a female. The first data shows that Socrates and Mello, used

having chit-chat at campus.

Excerpt 19 shows that the expressions of parting are See you and Bye. Mello expressed parting showing that he had to go to the place where Mello and
Socrates had decided. Then, Socrates replied with Okay. Let’s go See you showing that he invited Mello to go and meet him to that place. The expression of
Bye ends their conversation. Another finding shows that Al and Esti, also expressed parting. They used it

Context : Esti and Al had a lecture on the timetable for that day.

The conversation illustrates that they expressed leave-taking in the end of conversation. Esti used the expression see you in class showing that they probably
had a class to attend after having chit-chat. Al, then, said see you and let’s move showing that he also joined the same class, and finally invited her to go in the
class.
9. Saying Bad Words
The expression of saying bad words describes that speakers or listeners express bad words swear words to insult someone or to emphasize something.
The finding shows that the two couples of male students and the couple of a male and a female student used this expression. It has been found that 10 utterances
