gave comments about his friend, especially the appearance. It is exactly that they mocked his friend in front of him.
Likewise, the other couple, Aan and Mello, created and developed the content of gossip. One of them expressed his annoyance and then told one of his
friends’ experience. The following is the excerpt of the conversation. Excerpt 53
Context : Aan told his feeling about the sports facilities
in campus, especially for the graduate program. Then, he told Mello about his friend’s experience.
Aan : Yeah. The magister students with the UKM. That
sucks. Aan and Mello
: [silent] Mello
: We have the passion, too. Aan
: Yeah. Even Idris wants to join… = Ap217-19
The data shows that Aan and Mello talked about the facility in campus. They felt disappointed since the graduate students could not join the student
centers. Aan told that his friend, Idris, wanted to join one of the student centers at campus, but he was rejected because the activity only required the students from
the undergraduate programs.
c. Closing
In closing gossip, there must be various ways. The ways of males moved to another topic might be different. The couple of males, Socrates and Mello, closed
it by talking about their subjects. The following is the excerpt of the conversation. Excerpt 54
Context : Mello and Socrates were gossiping about someone
near them. Suddenly, Socrates changed the topic. Mello
: Okay. Forget about it.
Socrates : Ignore him. I’ve been so confused with SYNTAX and
SEMANTICS. Ap132-33 PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
Excerpt 54 describes that Mello expressed Okay. Forget about it directly to state that it was not important at all. Then, Socrates also expressed Ignore him to
emphasize that they did not need to talk about his friend anymore. Socrates tried to move to another topic by talking about confusing subjects.
Unlike the first couple of males, the other couple of male students, Aan and Mello, also used this function differently. One of them closed the topic of
gossiping but they were still trying to open a gossip about one of their girl friends. The excerpt of the conversation is as follows.
Excerpt 55 Context
: Aan and Mello were gossiping their friend, Idris. Then, suddenly Aan started to gossip about one of
girl friends. Mello
: Look at his cap
Aan : Hmhm. Look at…look at that girl with the orange…
== Ap2111-112
The conversation in excerpt 55 gives details that Mello still talked about his friend. Mello expressed Look at his cap showing that Aan had to see the cap
worn by his friend. Then, Aan tried to respond it before closing the gossip.
