Closing Making Chit-Chat or a Relatively Unfocused Conversation

about one’s private life without involving the third person. Bergmann 1993, quoted in Tracy, Ilie, and Sandel 2015:700 mentions three stages of making gossip, namely opening, content, and closing. Based on the data, the present researcher found that the couples of male students liked gossiping. The result shows that there were 29 utterances presenting 2.7 as the expressions of gossiping. The analysis of each stage can be described as follows.

a. Opening

In creating gossip, it requires a way to open gossiping. The way of opening gossip is various based on the context. The excerpt of the conversation of the couple of male students, Socrates and Mello, can be seen in excerpt 50. Excerpt 50 Context : Socrates and Mello talked about their assignments and impressions of certain subjects. Mello, then, moved to another topic. Socrates : Oh Uhm. What the FUCK is idiomatic Mello : Hmm. Look at that man Look at that guy Ap123-24 In the above, it can be stated that Socrates and Mello still discussed about something. Suddenly, Mello probably kept an eye on someone and asked his friend, Socrates, to look at that person. In this case, Mello tried to open a topic, especially for gossiping someone. The other couple, Aan and Mello, also used another way of opening gossip. One of them felt annoyed with the campus policy related to the sports facilities in campus. The following is the excerpt of the conversation. Excerpt 51 PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI Context : Aan and Mello talked about the sports facilities in Yogyakarta, and finally he told his feeling about the sports facilities in campus, especially for the graduate program. Aan : = Can we just come there and play? Mello : I wish. Aan : We wish? [laughing] Mello : But, can ya? Not so sure. Aan : Yeah. Mello : Ah. Aan and Mello : [silent] Aan : Too bad. They don’t facilitate… Ap29-15 The context in excerpt 51 shows that they talked about sports, and one of them tried to give comments about the sports facilities in campus. Aan thought that the graduate program did not facilitate them to join one of the student centers at campus. He expressed Too bad. They don’t facilitate to state his thought and start gossiping about campus facility.

b. Content

Several contents become the main points of gossiping. In this case, the male students created topics for gossiping variously. The couple of male students, Socrates and Mell o, were talking one’s appearance. The excerpt of the conversation is illustrated in excerpt 52. Excerpt 52 Context : Mello and Socrates started gossiping someone near to them. Mello : Hmm. Look at that man Look at that guy Socrates : Oh That Oh Looks like a bad guy. Ap124-25 The conversation describes that Socrates gave the description of someone. In this case, the person whom they were gossiping was their friend. Then, they gave comments about his friend, especially the appearance. It is exactly that they mocked his friend in front of him. Likewise, the other couple, Aan and Mello, created and developed the content of gossip. One of them expressed his annoyance and then told one of his friends’ experience. The following is the excerpt of the conversation. Excerpt 53 Context : Aan told his feeling about the sports facilities in campus, especially for the graduate program. Then, he told Mello about his friend’s experience. Aan : Yeah. The magister students with the UKM. That sucks. Aan and Mello : [silent] Mello : We have the passion, too. Aan : Yeah. Even Idris wants to join… = Ap217-19 The data shows that Aan and Mello talked about the facility in campus. They felt disappointed since the graduate students could not join the student centers. Aan told that his friend, Idris, wanted to join one of the student centers at campus, but he was rejected because the activity only required the students from the undergraduate programs.

c. Closing

In closing gossip, there must be various ways. The ways of males moved to another topic might be different. The couple of males, Socrates and Mello, closed it by talking about their subjects. The following is the excerpt of the conversation. Excerpt 54 Context : Mello and Socrates were gossiping about someone near them. Suddenly, Socrates changed the topic. Mello : Okay. Forget about it.
