and how about you? Ap613-14
Excerpt 9 shows that the expression of changing the topic of conversation is where do you come from?. The expression used by Esti is to move to another
topic. The data said that they introduced themselves and asked about the class they had chosen. Then, Esti tried to change the topic by asking Aan’s origin since
the present researcher assumes that they probably did not know each other well.
4. Agreeing on Something
This communicative function aims to state that one agrees with o thers’
opinion. The finding shows that all graduate students in each couple produced the expression of agreeing on something differently. It has been found that there were
30 utterances presenting 3.0. The first finding shows that Socrates and Mello expressed agreeing on something in conversation. The following is the example of
the conversation. Excerpt 10
Context : Mello and Socrates started gossiping someone
near to them.
Mello : Hmm. Look at that man Look at that guy
Socrates : Oh That Oh Looks like a bad guy.
Mello : Yeah. Ap124-26
The conversation explains that they talked about someone around them. Socrates described the person and Mello said Yeah. The expression shows that he
agreed on what Socrates said. It can be inferred that Mello also had the same thought as Socrates did.
The other couple, Star and Hayu, also produced another expression of agreeing on something. The expression was to agree one’s thinking about certain
case. The following is the excerpt of the conversation. Excerpt 11
Context : Hayu shared her feeling of choosing education stream.
Star : = Yes. = Okay. = So, it is the professional ones?
Hayu : Of course. Ap49-10
The context of the conversation explains that Hayu shared something to Star about her feeling and her study. Hayu had chosen education stream because she
had the passions of being a teacher or lecturer. For about several weeks, she felt that she did not have it anymore because of something. Star argued that Hayu
chose education stream was because of the job. Hayu agreed that the reason was true for her future to be an educator.
Likewise, Socrates and Rose also produced another expression of agreeing on something. The expression was to make one’s satisfied with what he has said.
The conversation can be illustrated in the following details. Excerpt 12
Context : Socrates and Rose discussed the article Kolom in
campus yard. Rose
: There are so many mosquitos. Socrates
: Oh Mosquitos? They love you. Rose
: Yes, because I’m full of blood. Ap5193-195
It can be interpreted that the place had many mosquitos. Rose was the person surrounded by the mosquitos. Then, Socrates assumed that the mosquitos
looked for fresh blood to suck. He thought that his blood was probably tasteless since the mosquitos were not around him. After that, Rose replied that the
mosquitos did love her because of her blood. In this sense, she agreed Socrates’ statements and added the information that she had a lot of blood in her body.
5. Mentioning Names or Titles
This communicative function is to grab one’s attention in conversation.
Moreover, mentioning names or titles becomes one of the expressions showing that people are trying to be close. From the analysis, it has been found that there
were 16 utterances or 1.6. The result shows that most of the couples mentioned names and titles. The first finding shows that Socrates and Mello, used this
expression. The excerpt of the conversation is illustrated as follows. Excerpt 13
Context : Socrates and Mello were outside the classroom and
busy with their own activities. Socrates
: Mello, where were you? why you didn’t come to the class today?
Mello : Overslept. Ap11-2
It can be interpreted in excerpt 13 that mentioning name was used by Socrates to attract Mello’s attention. It appeared in the beginning of conversation.
In this case, Socrates gave code by mentioning his friend’s name, Mello. This expression was to show that Socrates intended to talk to Mello.
Another finding shows that Sri and Maria, applied the expression of mentioning names and title. In this point, the title used was in a form of
Indonesian because of the influence of their daily language in communication. The example of the conversation is as follows.
Excerpt 14 Context
: Maria and Sri were in the lobby of the graduate program
in English language studies. Maria
: Hi, Sri
Sri : Halo, mbak Maria [laughing] Ap31-2
